I just picked up a Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring and I'm absolutely loving the plug-in hybrid setup, but charging it with the included 120V cable is taking forever. I’m looking to install a Level 2 home charger to make the most of that 21-mile electric range. Since the Aviator has a 3.6 kW onboard charger, I’m curious if I should stick with a basic 16-amp unit or future-proof with a 40-amp station. I’m also wondering which brands play best with the Lincoln Way app for monitoring charge status. Does anyone have a specific brand they recommend that fits a $400-$600 budget? What’s the most reliable charger you've found for this specific PHEV?
Hi there, and congrats on the new ride! I totally get the frustration with that 120V trickle charge—it feels like it takes a week to get those 21 miles back.
Even though the Aviator only pulls 3.6 kW, I honestly think you should go for a 40-amp unit. I mean, you’re already paying for the electrician, so you might as well future-proof for when you eventually get a full EV. In my experience, the ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 EV Charger is the gold standard. It’s super reliable and the app is way more intuitive than the Lincoln Way one for tracking costs, though they dont always "talk" perfectly to each other.
If that's too pricey, I've also had great luck with the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp. It’s usually under $400 and works like a charm. Anyway, back to your question—either of these will definitely top you off in a few hours! Good luck!
^ This. Also, jumping in here because I am obsessed with my Aviator GT! It is seriously such a fantastic ride and you are gonna love how it feels on pure electric. If you want something that is bulletproof and has a killer app to supplement the Lincoln Way stuff, check these out:
For your situation, I'd suggest going with the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40 Amp. Honestly, since you're on a budget under $600, it's a tank that'll last for years. Since the Lincoln Way app handles the scheduling anyway, you don't really need to pay extra for a 'smart' charger. Just plug it in and let the car's onboard 3.6 kW charger do its thing. It's super reliable, tbh!
Huh interesting. I had no idea. The more you know I guess 🤷
Totally agree! Your 3.6kW limit means 16A works, but 40A future-proofs. I'm disappointed by my cheap Megear Level 1-2 Charger 16 Amp; better compare the Grizzl-E Classic vs Wallbox Pulsar Plus 40 Amp for reliability.
