I just picked up a Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring and I'm absolutely loving the plug-in hybrid setup, but charging it with the included 120V cable is taking forever. I’m looking to install a Level 2 home charger to make the most of that 21-mile electric range. Since the Aviator has a 3.6 kW onboard charger, I’m curious if I should stick with a basic 16-amp unit or future-proof with a 40-amp station. I’m also wondering which brands play best with the Lincoln Way app for monitoring charge status. Does anyone have a specific brand they recommend that fits a $400-$600 budget? What’s the most reliable charger you've found for this specific PHEV?

Hi there, and congrats on the new ride! I totally get the frustration with that 120V trickle charge—it feels like it takes a week to get those 21 miles back.

Even though the Aviator only pulls 3.6 kW, I honestly think you should go for a 40-amp unit. I mean, you’re already paying for the electrician, so you might as well future-proof for when you eventually get a full EV. In my experience, the ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 EV Charger is the gold standard. It’s super reliable and the app is way more intuitive than the Lincoln Way one for tracking costs, though they dont always "talk" perfectly to each other.

If that's too pricey, I've also had great luck with the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp. It’s usually under $400 and works like a charm. Anyway, back to your question—either of these will definitely top you off in a few hours! Good luck!

^ This. Also, jumping in here because I am obsessed with my Aviator GT! It is seriously such a fantastic ride and you are gonna love how it feels on pure electric. If you want something that is bulletproof and has a killer app to supplement the Lincoln Way stuff, check these out:

  • Autel MaxiCharger Home Electric Vehicle Charger 40 Amp
  • Honestly love this one. It feels high quality and the app interface is way more modern than some of the older brands. Usually stays right in your $450-$550 budget.
  • Tesla Universal Wall Connector with J1772
  • Might sound weird to put a Tesla charger on a Lincoln, but the reliability is top tier and it handles the J1772 plug perfectly. You should definitely check out the State of Charge YouTube channel for reviews. Tom does these crazy cold-weather cable tests and drop tests that really show which chargers are actually built to last vs the cheap plastic ones. Stick with the 40-amp setup tho... you wont regret having the extra juice later on when you eventually upgrade to a full EV! Amazing choice on the car btw, the interior is just incredible.

For your situation, I'd suggest going with the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40 Amp. Honestly, since you're on a budget under $600, it's a tank that'll last for years. Since the Lincoln Way app handles the scheduling anyway, you don't really need to pay extra for a 'smart' charger. Just plug it in and let the car's onboard 3.6 kW charger do its thing. It's super reliable, tbh!

Huh interesting. I had no idea. The more you know I guess 🤷

Stumbled upon this discussion and had to jump in with some technical specs! Since youre looking for that sweet spot of DIY ease and high-quality internals, here are two units that are absolutely fantastic for an Aviator setup.

  • Tesla Universal Wall Connector Level 2 48A: The engineering here is incredible! It features an integrated J1772 adapter which is perfect for your Lincoln, but it natively supports NACS for your next vehicle. The thermal management is way better than most budget brands, so it stays cool even when pushed.
  • Lectron V-BOX 48 Amp Level 2 EV Charging Station: This is a heavy-duty beast and very DIY-friendly for a NEMA 14-50 plug-in install! It has a rugged IP55 weather rating which is great for garage longevity. Its basically a tank and avoids some of the software bugs you find in smarter units. I really recommend the Tesla unit because the Magic Dock style connector is just genius for future-proofing! Its worth stretching the budget a tiny bit for that hardware quality.

Totally agree! Your 3.6kW limit means 16A works, but 40A future-proofs. I'm disappointed by my cheap Megear Level 1-2 Charger 16 Amp; better compare the Grizzl-E Classic vs Wallbox Pulsar Plus 40 Amp for reliability.
