Ive been hunting for a used CX-5 for like three weeks now and honestly Im stuck between two paths. Found a 2021 CPO at a dealer here in Chicago for $24k which is over my $22k budget but has that warranty peace of mind.

Then there is this private seller on FB with a 2019 for $19k but Im nervous about buying from a rando. I need the AWD for the snow and gotta get this sorted by the end of next month. Is it better to stick to big sites like Carvana or should I be scouring local lots for the real hidden gems?

Honestly, the 2021 is the sweet spot if you can swing it. The 2019 models are okay but the 2021 got the updated infotainment system which is way faster and less buggy... basically the ghost touch issues were mostly fixed by then. If youre looking for deals, check Autotrader or Cars.com but filter specifically for private sellers and no accident reports to find the real gems. Heres what Id do:

  • Scour the official Mazda CPO inventory site instead of just using Google, sometimes dealers list there first.
  • If you go the FB route, bring a BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro OBDII Scan Tool to check for any hidden codes the seller might be hiding.
  • Look for a Mazda CX-5 Touring AWD 2021 specifically since it has the heated seats youll want for Chicago winters. Buying private can save you like 3k but you definitely gotta pay for a PPI at a shop. Since youre in Chicago, rust is a real thing on the subframes even on newer cars. The AWD on the CX-5 is actually really smart tho, it uses the i-Activ system which monitors slip like 200 times per second. Tbh Carvana is usually overpriced for Mazdas lately because they're so popular. Id hit up smaller suburban lots outside the city where the overhead is lower... theyre usually more likely to budge on that 22k limit if you show up ready to buy.

To add to the point above: check local credit union auctions for repo deals tho. Snag a 2018 AWD and use an ANCEL AD310 Classic Enhanced Universal OBD II Scanner to verify codes.
