Hey everyone! I recently picked up a 2023 Mazda CX-5 and I’m absolutely loving the ride so far. However, with all the crazy driving I see on my daily commute lately, I’ve decided that installing a dash cam is a must for some peace of mind. I’ve been looking at a few front-and-rear setups, but I’m a bit nervous about the actual installation process in this specific car.

My main concern is the housing around the rearview mirror—there’s a lot of sensors tucked away in that plastic casing for the rain-sensing wipers and the i-Activsense safety features. I’m worried about blocking a sensor or accidentally snapping a clip while trying to tuck the wires. Has anyone here managed to hardwire a camera into the fuse box? I’d really like to use the parking mode feature, but I’m not sure which fuse slots are best to tap into for constant power versus ignition-switched power without causing any battery drain issues.

I’m also curious about how you handled the rear camera wiring. Did you run the cable through the rubber grommet in the liftgate to keep it looking clean, or is there an easier path that doesn’t risk a leak? I really want to avoid having wires dangling across the trim or interfering with the side curtain airbags along the A-pillar.

I’m looking at a budget of around $250 for the unit itself, but I’m more focused on getting the install right. If you’ve done this yourself, did you run into any weird quirks with the CX-5's trim panels? I’d love to hear which brand you chose and if you have any tips for a clean, professional-looking DIY job. Which fuse taps did you end up using, and did you encounter any issues with the stop-start system interfering with the camera's power?

In my experience, you're 100% making the right call getting a cam for the CX-5. I've had mine for a few years now and it's saved my skin once already. For a $250 budget, you basically have two solid paths depending on what you value more.

Option A: VIOFO A129 Plus Duo Dual Dash Cam vs Option B: 70mai Dash Cam A810 Dual-Vision 4K.

The VIOFO A129 Plus Duo Dual Dash Cam is like the gold standard for reliability. It's not the flashiest, but it just *works*. The 70mai Dash Cam A810 Dual-Vision 4K has better night vision and 4K, but the Viofo feels more durable long-term.

Sooo, about that housing... honestly, dont sweat the sensors too much. Just stay to the passenger side of the plastic casing. For power, I used the fuse box in the driver-side kick panel. Use VIOFO HK3 ACC Hardwire Kit—it handles the parking mode without draining the battery cuz of the voltage cutoff. I tapped into 'F.OUTLET' for switched and 'HAZARD' for constant. No issues with the i-Stop system at all!

For the rear, definitely go through the rubber grommet. It's a pain (use some silicone spray!), but it's the only way to avoid leaks. Also, make sure you tuck the wires *behind* the A-pillar airbags, not across them... literally super important for safety. Just take your time with the clips and you wont snap anything. Good luck with the install!! 👍

Sooo I actually just finished doing a similar install on my cousin's new Mazda and oh man, I totally get the nerves! When I first saw that massive plastic housing behind the mirror, I was literally terrified of snapping those clips. But honestly?? It's way more flexible than it looks! Basically, you just gotta give it a firm but steady pry from the top and it pops right off.

Before I give advice on the specific wiring though, quick question—are you planning on using a high-end high-end SD card for this? Since you're worried about the stop-start system and battery drain, the card choice actually matters a ton for how much power the unit pulls during those cycles.

Anyway, if you wanna stay under that $250 limit and get a professional look, you should definitely check out the VIOFO A129 Plus Duo Dash Cam with GPS. It's usually way cheaper than the high-end stuff, leaving you plenty of cash for a good VIOFO HK3 ACC Hardwire Kit for A129 Series and a high-endurance SanDisk 256GB High Endurance microSDXC Card UHS-I V30.

For the rear wire, I highkey recommend going through the rubber grommet! It’s a bit of a pain, but using some silicone spray makes the cable slide right through so you don't risk any leaks. I tried the "easy" way once and the wire just looked messy and caught on the trim... never again! Good luck, you're gonna love having that extra security!!

Check out some of the dedicated Mazda forums like Mazda247 or even the CX-5 subreddit—there's actually a super detailed PDF floating around there specifically for the 2022+ refreshes. Honestly, I think you're right to be cautious about that sensor housing. It's packed tight in there!

Pro tip: If you want the cleanest setup without messing with the fuse box, you might want to consider a mirror power adapter. It basically taps into the power for your auto-dimming mirror. It's way easier, but the catch is you usually lose parking mode since that power isn't constant.

If you're dead set on hardwiring for parking mode (Option A) vs. the mirror tap (Option B), here's the deal. Option A gives you that 24/7 protection but it's a bit of a project. IIRC, for the 2023 CX-5, people usually tap into the 'F.OUTLET' or 'SUNROOF' fuses. But be careful—the stop-start (i-Stop) system can be realy finicky with voltage drops. If the battery voltage dips too low, the cam might shut off or the car might throw a wierd error code.

For the rear cam, definitely go through the rubber grommet in the liftgate. It’s a bit of a pain, but like, if you just hang the wire, it’ll eventually snag or leak. I used a bit of soapy water to slide the cable through the boot and it worked like a charm. Also, make sure to route the front wire BEHIND the side curtain airbag in the A-pillar. Seriously, don't just tuck it under the rubber seal or you'll regret it if that airbag ever needs to deploy. Stickin to your $250 budget is totally doable if you do the labor yourself, plus you know it's done right! gl!
