Hey everyone! We just picked up a Mazda CX-90 PHEV and are planning our first big family road trip next month. We’re excited, but with the third row up for the kids, the rear cargo space feels pretty tight, especially once we pack the charging cable bag. I'm looking for recommendations on the best accessories to maximize our storage. Are you guys using specific roof boxes that don't tank the electric range too much, or maybe a hitch-mounted carrier? I’m also curious if there’s a cargo organizer that fits perfectly in that small space behind the third row. What’s your must-have cargo accessory for keeping a full house organized on long drives?

I went through this last year. Honestly, I used the MaxxHaul 70107 Steel Hitch Carrier ($85) because the lower drag coefficient basically saved my MPGe. Its a pretty solid move. gl

For your situation, I would suggest being pretty cautious about adding stuff to the roof. Honestly, I've seen the EV range drop significantly with a big box. If you're dead set on it, the Thule Motion XT XL Rooftop Cargo Carrier is great, but it'll tank your efficiency. Imo, a hitch-mounted option is way better for aerodynamics. I use the MaxxHaul 70107 53" x 19" Aluminum Hitch Cargo Carrier and it works well, just make sure to not exceed the tongue weight capacity of the PHEV hitch... that's super important for safety!!

For that tiny space behind the third row, the Mazda CX-90 Genuine OEM Cargo Net is basically essential so bags dont spill out when you open the hatch. Also, consider the Mazda CX-90 All-Weather Cargo Tray with Logo to protect the floor from that charging cable bag. Be careful with weight distribution so you dont mess with the handling. gl!

Yo! Just found this thread and seriously, I went through this exact same struggle last month before our big coastal trip. Honestly, I’m a bit of a data nerd, so I spent way too much time calculating the MPGe hit between a roof box and a hitch setup. Like, those Thule boxes are amazing quality but the aerodynamic drag is real... on a PHEV, you feel that range drop-off highkey once you’re on the highway and the battery runs low.

I couldn't really justify dropping $800+ on a setup that kills efficiency, so I went the budget-technical route. I picked up the Mockins Folding Hitch Cargo Carrier with Cargo Bag and Net for around $160. It’s a fantastic value because it includes the stabilizer which is huge for preventing that annoying hitch wobble. Plus, by keeping the gear behind the car instead of on top, my highway efficiency stayed basically flat! I mean, keeping everything in the slipstream is the pro move for these heavy PHEVs, right?

For the interior, that small space behind the third row is definitely tricky. I ended up using the Drive Auto Products Car Trunk Organizer which fits that narrow gap surprisingly well. It’s perfect for stashing the charging cable and all the kids' random snacks so they aren't flying around every time I hit the regenerative braking. Also, lowkey tip: if you dont wanna spend much, those cheap collapsible crates from Costco actually wedge in there pretty securely too! Anyway, it worked out great for us without breaking the bank. Good luck with the pack! 👍
