I've tried many over the years and keep coming back to a specific setup for my S-classes. It's slightly more than the Walmart stuff but the S550 deserves a little treat occasionally.

• I usually run Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 because it holds its viscosity so well in these engines, especially when they get hot.
• Always pair it with a Mann-Filter HU 718/5 x Metal-Free Oil Filter so you don't have to worry about cheap bypass valves failing.
• Grab the 5-liter jugs online from places like FCP Euro or Amazon, usually keeps it under $50 if you catch a sale. Basically, as long as it's MB 229.5 spec and you change it every 5k or 7k miles, you're golden. The M278 engines can be picky with heat so I dont like stretching it to the full 10k interval MB suggests... ngl, it just feels too long for a turbo engine.
