Got a 2012 S550. What oil is everyone using? Looking for recommendations, nothing too expensive!

@Reply #2 - good point! Those oil analysis reports really cut through the marketing fluff. Tbh, looking through this thread, we've got a solid mix of the Mobil 1 purists, the budget-conscious SuperTech guys, and the mid-range Castrol fans. In my experience, if you're doing your own work like me, you eventually find a favorite that just feels right. I've tried many over the years and keep coming back to a specific setup for my S-classes. It's slightly more than the Walmart stuff but the S550 deserves a little treat occasionally.

  • I usually run Liqui Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 because it holds its viscosity so well in these engines, especially when they get hot.
  • Always pair it with a Mann-Filter HU 718/5 x Metal-Free Oil Filter so you don't have to worry about cheap bypass valves failing.
  • Grab the 5-liter jugs online from places like FCP Euro or Amazon, usually keeps it under $50 if you catch a sale. Basically, as long as it's MB 229.5 spec and you change it every 5k or 7k miles, you're golden. The M278 engines can be picky with heat so I dont like stretching it to the full 10k interval MB suggests... ngl, it just feels too long for a turbo engine.

I use Mobil 1 0W-40. It works for my '13 S550, but check your manual first!

Consider Mobil1 0W-40; meets MB 229.5 spec. Watch for shear-down; UOAs are your friend.

Hey! For a 2012 S550, don't overthink it. I've tried many over the years. Mobil 1's good, but honestly, a quality synthetic like SuperTech from Walmart works great and saves a ton. Just stick to the recommended weight (check your manual!), and change it regularly. You'll be fine. Why spend a fortune?

Hey! For me, safety's key. I use Castrol Edge, around $50. It's not the cheapest, but protects the engine well, which is safer in the long run, right? Happy with it, no complaints after 2 years. Anyone else prioritize long-term engine safety?

Pennzoil's great. Seeing it around $30 online, works well in my '13 S550, no complaints.
