Hey fellow Mercedes enthusiasts! I’ve been doing some research on coolant options for my 2020 Mercedes-Benz C300, and I wanted to get your thoughts on what works best. I know Mercedes-Benz recommends their own branded coolant, but I’ve heard mixed opinions about whether aftermarket options are just as good—or even better. What’s your experience?
From what I’ve read, the C300 requires a specific type of coolant that meets MB 325.0 or MB 325.5 specifications. This ensures compatibility with the aluminum components in the engine and cooling system. I’ve seen brands like Zerex G-05 and Pentosin NF mentioned as alternatives, but I’m not sure if they’re worth considering. Has anyone tried these or other brands? Did you notice any differences in performance or longevity?
Also, I’m curious about the importance of using distilled water when mixing coolant. I’ve heard it’s crucial to avoid tap water to prevent mineral buildup, but I’d love to hear if anyone has had issues with this. Tbh, I was in the same boat a few months back when I first got my C300. I'm still pretty new to doing my own maintenance, so I was super nervous about picking the wrong thing and causing some expensive damage, you know? I wanted to save some cash because the dealer prices are just crazy, but I also wanted to be safe. After a lot of reading, I found that Zerex G40 Phosphate Free Antifreeze/Coolant is a solid budget-friendly choice that actually meets the Mercedes specs. It’s usually about half the price of the branded stuff from the parts counter. I also looked into Pentosin Pentofrost E, which is another one people seem to trust for European cars. About the water thing—definitely stick with distilled. I just grabbed a gallon for like 99 cents at the grocery store. It’s such a small price to pay to avoid mineral buildup in the engine later on, right? Basically, if you’re looking to save money without cutting corners on quality, those aftermarket options that specifically list the MB spec on the back are the way to go.
