Where can I actually find a decent used Mercedes C-Class online without getting scammed or dealing with crazy markups right now? Im seriously hitting a wall here. Ive been hunting for a C300, looking for something between 2017 and 2019 specifically because I like that body style and it fits my daily commute into the city. My old Accord finally bit the dust after 200k miles and honestly I just want something that feels nice to sit in for an hour of traffic every morning. My budget is capped at 23k and I really need to have something parked in my driveway by the end of next week because this rental car is eating my savings alive.

I spent the last three nights scrolling through Autotrader and Cars.com until my eyes hurt but it is such a disaster. I found three cars that looked perfect but when I called the dealerships they were like oh that car sold two days ago but hey we have this other one for 5k more. It feels like bait and switch is the standard now and its driving me crazy. Then I checked Carvana because people said it was easy but their prices are insane right now and I keep reading these horror stories about people waiting six weeks for their registration papers which I cant afford to deal with.

I even tried looking at Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist but the people on there are so sketchy. One guy wouldnt even send me the VIN number because he said it was for security reasons? Like how am I supposed to check the Carfax then? I read on a couple of blogs that I should look at Mercedes-specific forums but every time I go to the marketplace on MBWorld its all 80k dollar AMG models or cars that have been modified so much I wouldnt trust them to get me to the grocery store.

I live near Chicago so I really want to find something that hasn't been eaten by salt but buying from a southern state online feels like such a gamble if I cant see it in person first. Is there some specific site for used luxury cars that actually vets their listings or am I just stuck dealing with the big sites and hoping for the best... I feel like Im missing something obvious.

@Reply #1 - good point! Getting an inspection is huge. I went through this exact headache recently and I was honestly pretty satisfied using CarGurus instead of the usual suspects. Their price ratings actually saved me a ton of time because I could filter out the dealers that were clearly dreaming with their markups. No complaints here, it worked well and I found a clean 2018 within a week. Since you're in Chicago and need it fast, don't just look at the big MB dealerships. Sometimes the independent luxury lots have better off-lease inventory that fits that 23k cap better. Just a few things that helped me stay sane:

  • Use the CarGurus price drop alerts. If a C300 sits for more than 20 days, they almost always slash the price on Tuesday mornings.
  • Look for cars with the 18 inch wheels instead of the 19s. They handle the Chicago potholes way better and the tires are cheaper to replace.
  • Grab a FOXWELL NT510 Elite for Mercedes-Benz Full System Scanner before you go look. You can plug it in and see if they cleared any nasty engine codes right before you arrived.
  • If the tread is low, try to negotiate for a set of Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 Performance Tires as part of the deal. They're a lifesaver on the Dan Ryan during a slushy commute. Tbh at 23k for a 2017-2019, you're gonna find a lot of high-mileage ones, so just keep an eye on that service history. Good luck!

Honestly, the car market is still a total circus right now. I went through this same thing last year and ended up skipping the big sites for a bit. If you need something by next week, your best bet is probably to cast a wider net but use tools that filter out the junk.

  • CarGurus Used Car Search is probably your best friend here. Unlike the others, they rank stuff by price compared to the market. Look for listings that have been sitting for 30+ days... those dealers are usually way more desperate to move the unit and wont play as many games with the bait and switch stuff.
  • Autolist Mobile App is another decent one because it pulls from everywhere. I found it way faster than manually checking fifteen different sites.
  • Specialized forums like MBWorld. I know you said it is all AMGs, but keep an eye on the sub-forums for the non-AMG models. People there actually take care of their stuff and usually provide a full service history. One thing tho... 23k for a clean 2018 or 2019 Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC Sedan is a tight squeeze. You might have to look at 2016 or 2017 models if you want lower mileage. Also, if you buy from the south to avoid the Chicago rust, just pay a local shop 150 bucks for a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI). Its way cheaper than a flight or a surprise repair bill later. Dont skip that step if you buy sight unseen.
