Just picked up a Wilderness and I’m ready to hit the trails! Since it already has the factory lift and tires, I’m looking for the next best upgrades—maybe some ditch lights or heavy-duty skid plates for peace of mind. What are your must-have accessories for a functional off-road build that won't compromise the daily drive?
This^ Also wanted to add my two cents! Armor is highkey the best peace of mind you can buy. I remember wheeling out in Big Bear and hearing that gut-wrenching *thud*—luckily I had my plates on.
If you're comparing options, honestly look at the Rival 4x4 Aluminum Skid Plate Kit for Subaru Crosstrek. It's 6mm aluminum, so it's super thick but doesnt weigh the car down like steel would for your daily commute. Compared to the LP Aventure Main Skid Plate, the Rival covers a bit more area under the diff imo.
For lights, since someone already mentioned Baja, check out the Diode Dynamics SS3 Pro LED Pods (Amber). I've used both and highkey prefer the Diode Dynamics TIR optics—the beam is sooo much more focused for ditch lights. Basically, they throw light exactly where you need it without blinding yourself on the hood. Good luck with the build!! 👍
+1 to what was said earlier. Armor is lowkey the best thing you can do first... tbh I was sooo stressed about the cost when I got my Wilderness last month. I'm still kinda new to this but I spent hours looking at technical specs and weight loads. Like, did you know adding too much heavy steel protection can actually mess with your suspension if the front sags? I was worried about that so I waited until I found a deal on a lighter setup. I actually found my current setup on a marketplace for a steal cuz the guy was trading his car in. It SAVED my oil pan literally the first week I had them on! If you're looking to save money, definitely check the used groups first before buying brand new. It makes the daily drive part way less stressful when you know you aren't gonna crack something expensive lol. Peace!
Yo, congrats on the Wilderness! I've been wheeling Subarus for about 12 years now, and iirc, my biggest mistake was thinking factory protection was enough. I ended up with a nasty dent in my oil pan on a moderate trail because I skipped the armor.
For your situation, I'd compare the Primitive Racing Full Armor Skid Plate Kit for 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness against the LP Aventure Front Skid Plate for Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness. Primitive uses 3/16 inch 5052 aluminum which is basically the industry standard for durability, whereas LP Aventure focuses a lot on aesthetics and bolt-on simplicity. Primitive is better for hard hits, but LP Aventure keeps that clean look.
If you want lights, Baja Designs S2 Pro Amber LED Driving/Combo Light Pods are elite for ditch lights. Honestly tho, skid plates are the only must-have before you go too deep. It works out better to spend the money now than on a tow truck later... basically buy once, cry once. gl!
I've messed around with a few Crosstrek builds over the years and learned that side protection is usually the first thing people forget until they're pivot-turning on a rock. In my experience, Body Armor 4x4 Rock Sliders for 2024 Subaru Crosstrek are a way better value than the Rocky Road Outfitters Rock Sliders for Crosstrek Wilderness which can be a bit more finicky to install. Also, for lights, I've tried many and keep coming back to Heretic Studio Quattro LED Light Pods over things like the KC HiLiTES Flex Era 3 Dual Mode SAE Light System. The Heretics are CNC-machined so they dont fog up as easily when the weather gets nasty. Quick tip: always go for amber lenses if you plan on driving through dust or snow. Clear white just reflects everything back at you and makes it impossible to see... learned that the hard way in a blizzard near Tahoe a few years back.
Yo, I was just thinking about this more... unfortunately, everyone focuses on the armor and forgets that you eventually get stuck anyway. I had some major issues with a generic snatch strap fraying after just two uses, which is honestly super sketchy when you're out there alone. If you're doing the DIY thing, you gotta check out the ARB TRED Pro Recovery Boards or at least a solid tire repair kit. Another thing, skip the cheap air pumps. I've had two of those high-rated ones from Amazon die on me mid-trail. Not as good as expected, ngl. I switched to the Viair 88P Portable Air Compressor and it's been a tank for the price. It's way more reliable for airing down and back up. Check out the SubaruWilderness subreddit or the off-road tech sections on the main Subaru forums for some decent DIY wiring diagrams before you start hacking into your harness for lights tho.
Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.
