I recently picked up a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, and while I love the car, the trunk space is a bit tight for my camping gear and skis. I’m looking for a roof box that fits the shorter roofline perfectly without hanging way over the windshield or interfering with the rear hatch opening. I’ve been eyeing the Thule Motion XT and some Yakima models, but I’m worried about wind noise and how a bulky box might tank my gas mileage on long highway drives. Does anyone have a specific brand or size they recommend that doesn't look too oversized for the car? I’d love to know what you’re using and if you can still fully open your hatch with it mounted!

Hey! Congrats on the new 2024 Crosstrek! I've been a Subaru guy for over a decade, and honestly, finding the perfect box for the Trek roofline is a classic puzzle. For your situation, I've spent years testing different setups to avoid that annoying hatch rub.

I really recommend looking at the Yakima SkyBox 12 Carbonite Cargo Box. It's long and narrow, so it's amazing for skis but doesn't look like a massive turtle shell on a small car. If you want something more premium, the Inno Shadow 16 Cargo Box is a fantastic alternative because it has a lower profile which really helps with wind noise and MPG.

Comparing the two, the Yakima is more rugged for camping, but the Inno is sleek and better for highway gas mileage. Tbh, both should let you fully open that hatch if you slide the crossbars forward! Good luck!

Seconding the recommendation above! To keep costs down without sacrificing aerodynamics, look at the Yakima SkyBox 12 Carbonite Cargo Box. It's narrow enough for gear but won't kill your MPG like wider boxes do. Honestly, the 12cu ft size is the sweet spot for the 2024 Crosstrek's hatch clearance.

For your situation, I've got to focus on the technical side of mounting because safety and hatch clearance are non-negotiable on the 2024 Crosstrek. Honestly, I've had issues with many larger boxes shifting under heavy wind loads, which can actually damage your crossbars or sunroof if you aren't careful. While others mentioned some decent options, I'd suggest looking at the Thule Force XT Sport 11 Cubic Foot Cargo Box versus the Yakima RocketBox Pro 11 Cargo Box.

The Thule Force XT Sport 11 Cubic Foot Cargo Box is specifically designed for shorter rooflines—it’s narrow and long enough for skis, but the mounting hardware is recessed to keep it low-profile. On the other hand, the Yakima RocketBox Pro 11 Cargo Box is a bit more budget-friendly but can be slightly noisier at highway speeds. Personally, I think the Thule is the superior choice for minimizing drag and protecting your gas mileage. Just make sure your crossbars are torqued to spec; I've seen too many people skip that step and regret it! Hope this helps!

In my experience, picking a roof box for a car with a shorter roofline like the 2024 Crosstrek requires a cautious approach to avoid hatch interference and safety issues. Over the years, I've seen too many people buy a massive box only to realize they can't open their trunk or that the wind drag is unbearable. For your situation, I've found that the Thule Motion XT L 16 Cubic Foot Cargo Box is the sweet spot.

It's specifically designed with a forward-mounting position that clears the hatch while maintaining a sleek, aerodynamic profile to minimize that annoying wind whistle. Honestly, any box will hit your MPG a bit, but this one is relatively efficient. If you're really worried about height and drag, I'd also look at the Yakima SkyBox Lo Carbonite 15 Cubic Foot Cargo Box. It's lower profile, which is great for garage clearance. Just make sure your crossbars are tightened to spec—safety first! Hope this helps!
