Just found this thread while looking for some other 4Runner interior mods. Over the years, I've tried many different setups in my rigs, and compatibility with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) housing is usually the biggest headache. If you're serious about this, you need something that can filter out the blind spot monitoring signals from other Toyotas on the road, or you'll be hearing beeps every five seconds. In my experience, these are the best paths to take for a clean 4Runner install:

  • Uniden R8 Extreme Long Range Radar Laser Detector has incredible filtering for those annoying false alerts from BSM sensors. It's pricey but worth it for the peace of mind.
  • Valentine V1 Gen2 Radar Detector is another solid choice if you want the directional arrows. It handles the 4Runners vertical windshield angle better than most.
  • Don't just use a suction cup. I highly recommend using a BlendMount BNR-2015 Specialty Series to attach it directly to the rearview mirror stem. It keeps the detector clear of the TSS camera housing and looks way more professional. Installing it this way ensures you arent blocking your view or the cars safety sensors.

@Reply #7 - good point! Honestly, after trying a few different setups over the years, the biggest issue isnt always the detector itself but how people mount them. I've seen way too many folks get distracted by stuff hanging off the windshield which is a huge safety risk imo.

  • Be super careful with those generic suction cups. They tend to fail in the summer heat and your expensive tech ends up on the floor.
  • Dont mount it right in your line of sight. It sounds obvious but people do it and it creates a blind spot.
  • If you go the hardwire route, stay clear of the curtain airbags in the A-pillar. I actually spent way too long yesterday looking at dash cams because some guy backed into my fender at the grocery store. Didn't even leave a note, just took off. Now I am falling down a rabbit hole of ceramic coatings to see if I can hide the scuff myself, but I will probably just end up buying a paint pen. Anyway, just make sure your install is clean and doesnt mess with your visibility.
