Ive been a Toyota guy for like fifteen years now and I finally sold my 04 Tacoma because I needed more room for the kids and the dog but man I did not expect the market for 4Runners to be this insane right now. I know my way around a wrench and Ive done my own suspension swaps and timing belts on the old 22RE engines so I'm not afraid of a little high mileage but looking for something under $20k in the Pacific Northwest is proving to be a total nightmare. Everything I find is either a rusted out frame that looks like it spent its life in the ocean or someone wants $25k for a 2010 with 280k miles on it and - no lowballers I know what I have - lol.
I'm getting really hyped about getting back on the trails this summer and I have a trip planned for July to the Cascades so the clock is ticking a bit and I really want to have the rig built out by then. I found this one listing for a 2012 Trail Edition about three hours away and it looks super clean in the photos and the price is right at $18,500 which is perfect for my budget. The guy says the frame is solid and it has the KDSS system which I know can be a pain if it leaks but he says it's dry.
The weird thing is he mentioned the 4WD actuator is stuck and only works if you tap it with a hammer while someone else shifts it inside? Ive dealt with the older manual transfer cases but I haven't messed with the electronic ones much on the early 5th gens. Is this actually just a simple solenoid issue or am I looking at pulling the whole transfer case apart just to get it into 4Lo? Also does anyone know if $20k is even realistic for a reliable 5th gen anymore or should I just suck it up and look for a super clean V8 4th gen instead even with the gas prices being what they are...
Man the PNW market is absolutely brutal lately so I totally feel your pain. In my experience, finding a clean 5th gen under 20k is like finding a needle in a haystack, especially a Trail Edition. About that 4WD actuator... honestly, that tapping with a hammer trick is a huge red flag. Over the years, I've seen a ton of these where the internal motor gets gummed up because the previous owner never engaged 4Lo. On those early 5th gens, the actuator is often timed to the internal gears, and replacing it usually means dropping the transfer case and splitting it open. Its a nightmare job compared to the old manual stuff we used to work on. If you're confident cracking open a t-case, go for it, but use that as a major bargaining chip to get the price down even more. $18,500 sounds almost too good for a Trail in our neck of the woods, so definitely crawl under there and look for hidden issues. I always bring a Estwing 12 oz. Welder's Chipping Hammer to poke at the frame rails because sellers love to hide scale with fresh rattle can paint. If you do pull the trigger, the first thing I'd do is a full fluid service with Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 in the diffs and transfer case to keep things moving. Personally, I'd take a clean 5th gen over a V8 4th gen just for the interior space and updated safety for the kids, but you gotta be ready to wrench on that electronic 4WD system right away. Its definitely doable though... hit me up if you need the torque specs or anything else. Good luck man!
Like someone mentioned, that actuator is sketchy... seriously look at V8 4th gens instead! Theyre amazing and leave budget for a Warn VR EVO 10-S 10000lb Winch before July! youre gonna love it!
Stumbled on this discussion today and had to jump in... ^ This. Also, that actuator issue is a huge red flag for me! On those early 5th gens, you usually have to drop and split the transfer case to actually replace the actuator properly because it's bolted from the inside. It is a total nightmare of a job if it finally dies on the trail. Tapping it with a hammer is just a band-aid for gunked-up gears or a failing motor. Honestly? If you want reliability without the 5th gen tax, go find a clean V8 4th gen! I absolutely love the power delivery on the Toyota 4Runner 4.7L V8 2UZ-FE. It is such a fantastic engine for the Cascades. You can find a mint one for like 14k and then spend the rest of your budget on a Bilstein 5100 Series Suspension Kit and some beefy Falken Wildpeak A/T3W All-Terrain Tires. You will have a much more capable rig for under $20k than a beat-up 5th gen with electronic issues. Just make sure the frame is clean and keep an eye on the exhaust manifolds. Go for the V8, you wont regret it, the sound alone is worth the extra gas money lol! If you need help looking at 4th gen specs just lmk, I am happy to point you toward some good local listings I have seen.
