Where on earth are people actually finding RAV4 Hybrids in stock right now without a year-long waitlist? Ive bought three Toyotas from my local dealer over the years so I know how the allocation system works but this is just insane lately. I need a new daily for my commute up in Seattle since my old 08 Camry is basically dead and I really want an XLE Premium. My budget is 40-42k max but every lot within 200 miles is totally empty or they want these massive 5k markups which I just wont do. I start a new job in three weeks and really need a car by then. Are there any high-volume dealers on the west coast that actually have units or am I just stuck?
I went through this mess last month and it was exhausting. I cross-shopped a few things because I couldnt wait.
Honestly, in my experience searching the PNW for years, your best bet is calling dealers in Idaho or Eastern Washington. Seattle lots are just picked clean. Ive found that for a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium, you gotta call every dealer in a 500-mile radius daily and ask specifically for unit cancellations. Its how I scored my last few Toyotas without markups. High-volume guys usually have a rotating list.
To add to the point above: checking those spreadsheets and calling out of state is basically a full-time job. Everyone else mentioned looking at other brands or driving 500 miles, which is okay if you have the time, but I just couldnt do it. When I was in this spot last year, I actually gave up on the fancy trim levels. I realized that the more tech and sensors I added, the more stuff could go wrong in ten years anyway. My current setup is just a basic trim I found by pure luck because someone elses financing fell through at a local lot. It wasnt my first choice color-wise, but it works and its reliable. Honestly, sometimes just taking whatever is physically on the truck is the only way to avoid those markups. If you need a car for work in three weeks, you might have to compromise on the bells and whistles just to get the reliability you want.
I would suggest looking into high-volume dealerships in the Portland metro area or Northern California. You might want to consider tracking the specific VIN allocations through crowdsourced spreadsheets online. Be careful tho, some dealers claim no markup but then add expensive accessories to the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XLE Premium which hits your budget hard. Make sure to get the total out-the-door price in writing before you head over.
