Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger on a new VW ID.4 Pro S, and I’m absolutely loving the ride so far. However, I’m quickly realizing that the standard Level 1 charging cord just isn't cutting it for my daily commute, and I really need to get a proper Level 2 setup installed in my garage.

I’ve been doing some research, but the sheer number of options is getting a bit overwhelming. Since the ID.4 has an 11 kW onboard charger, I want to make sure I get a cable or station that can actually take advantage of those speeds without breaking the bank. I already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet ready to go, so I’m primarily looking for a high-quality plug-and-play unit rather than something that requires a complex hardwired installation.

I also need a cable that’s at least 20 to 25 feet long because of where my charging port sits in relation to my outlet. I've been looking at the ChargePoint Home Flex and the Grizzl-E Classic, but I’ve heard mixed things about how well some third-party apps sync with the ID.4’s own scheduled charging software.

For those of you who have been driving the ID.4 for a while, which Level 2 home charging cable have you found to be the most reliable and user-friendly for daily use?

For your situation, I would suggest going with a solid 40A unit since you've already got the NEMA 14-50 outlet ready. I've been driving my ID.4 for over a year now and honestly, the struggle with the Level 1 cord is REAL lol. I remember waiting like two days for a full charge... never again! Here's what I recommend based on my setup: - Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger 40 Amp NEMA 14-50. This thing is basically a tank. It doesn't have a fancy app, which I actually PREFER because the ID.4 software can be so moody with external schedules. I just set the car to charge immediately and let it rip. It's got a 24ft cable which reaches my port perfectly.
- ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 WiFi Enabled EV Charger 16 to 50 Amp. If you really want the data and apps, this is the one. It's super sleek and the cable is really flexible even when it's freezing outside. I tried my neighbor's and it felt highkey premium. Basically, even tho the ID.4 can take 11 kW, a plug-in unit on a 50A circuit is capped at 9.6 kW (40A) due to safety codes. Honestly, you wont even notice the difference between 9.6 and 11 kW for overnight charging. Idk the exact math off the top of my head, but I usually wake up to a full 80% charge in like 5 or 6 hours max. The ID.4's internal scheduling is... well, it's special. I found that "dumb" chargers like the Grizzl-E avoid those weird handshake issues where the car and charger keep arguing. Plus, it's way cheaper. gl with the new ride! 👍

Curious about one thing: are you planning to use the car's built-in timer or do you want the charger to handle the schedule? I ask cuz if you want to save money, a "dumb" charger like the Lectron NEMA 14-50 Level 2 EV Charger 40 Amp is honestly perfect. It avoids the software clashing issues and is way cheaper than smart units. Plus, it has that 25ft reach you need!!

^ This. Also, I am so glad someone mentioned the outlet quality because honestly, the heat management on these home setups is such a headache. I have spent way too many nights stressing over my garage wiring and checking the plug every hour... it is just exhausting. Ngl, the ID.4 software feels like it is fighting you half the time too. I have had so many instances where I think everything is set and then I wake up to like 20 percent battery. It is the absolute worst feeling when you have got a long commute ahead of you and the car just decided not to cooperate. If you are doing the DIY route like I did, honestly just go with something from Schumacher Electric or maybe look at the stuff from Siemens EV Chargers. You kinda cant go wrong with those bigger brands that have been around forever. They are solid and usually play nicer with the car than the super high-tech ones that try to be too smart for their own good. Hang in there tho, the first few weeks are definitely the hardest part of the learning curve but you will get it sorted eventually!

Seconding the recommendation above, 40A is the sweet spot. One big WARNING tho: stay away from fancy *smart* features if you can. The ID.4 software is... quirky. Basically, if both the car and the charger try to manage schedules, they usually clash and you'll wake up to a dead battery. I've seen it happen for years. A high-quality "dumb" unit is actually way more reliable for these Volkswagens... trust me.

In my experience, safety is the #1 priority. I'd skip the cheap unbranded stuff and check out the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 40 Amp or the Wallbox Pulsar Plus 40 Amp Level 2 EV Charger. Both are UL-listed, which is non-negotiable for fire safety. The Emporia is roughly $400 and is super robust, whereas the Wallbox is compact but pricier. Personally, the Emporia is the best bang-for-your-buck for long-term reliability! gl!

Honestly, everyone's talking about the chargers themselves, but as someone who's done my own electrical installs for years, I'm gonna disagree slightly with the 'just plug and play' advice without a serious warning. If you’re going DIY, the brand of the cable is actually secondary to the quality of the outlet you’re plugging into. Most residential outlets aren’t built for the 8+ hours of extreme heat an ID.4 puts on them daily. Quick DIY tips for a safe setup:
* Replace your current outlet with a commercial-grade Hubbell HBL9450A or Bryant 9450FR. These are 'tank' status and won't melt like the cheap $10 ones usually found in garages.
* Consider the Autel MaxiCharge Home Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger. It’s super easy to configure yourself via Bluetooth and the hardware is realy robust for the price. Basically, the charger is only as good as the wiring behind it. Definately worth the 20 minutes to swap the receptacle so you can sleep easy while the car drinks its juice!
