I finally took delivery of my C8 Corvette a few months ago, and while the mid-engine layout is absolutely incredible, I can’t help but feel like the factory exhaust note is just a bit too polite. Don’t get me wrong, the LT2 sounds great when you’re really pinning it, but during daily driving, it feels a little muffled. I really want to unlock that aggressive, exotic growl that a car looking this sharp deserves.
I’ve been doing some digging, and the options out there are honestly a bit overwhelming. I’ve looked at the Borla Atak and S-Type systems, and I’ve also seen some clips of the Fabspeed Valvetronic setup which sounds insane, but I’m worried about drone on the highway. I definitely want to keep the NPP valve functionality because I live in a quiet neighborhood and don't want to be 'that guy' at 6:00 AM, but I want it to absolutely scream when I open it up on the backroads.
Another thing I'm trying to figure out is the heat management. Since the engine is right there, I’ve heard some systems can run pretty hot—does anyone have experience with which brands have the best heat shielding? Also, I'm trying to decide if it's worth going for high-flow cats or just sticking to a cat-back system for now to avoid any potential CEL (Check Engine Light) issues or warranty headaches.
My budget is around $3,000 to $5,000 for the parts, and I’m looking for something that offers a deep, muscle-car tone without sounding raspy or tinny at high RPMs.
For those of you who have already made the swap, which exhaust setup do you think offers the best balance of volume, tone, and build quality for the C8, and did you run into any issues with the AFM (Active Fuel Management) valves during the install?

Sooo I've been researching this stuff like crazy since I got my C8 last year, and I totally get the struggle... the stock exhaust is way too quiet for how the car looks lol. If you want to avoid that raspy "exotic" scream and stay within that muscle car vibe, you might wanna look at the Corsa Performance Variable Sound Level Cat-Back Exhaust for C8 Corvette.
Corsa is basically the king of no-drone tech, which is huge if you're worried about highway cruising. Plus, it plays nice with the NPP and AFM valves, so you wont get those annoying CEL codes. Since you're worried about heat, definitely check out the Lingenfelter by Corsa Extreme-S Exhaust System too. It comes with some serious heat shielding. Honestly, I'd stick to the cat-back for now and skip the high-flow cats if you're worried about the warranty... it’s just safer for a daily. Good luck with the build! 👍
Just sharing my experience: I tried to save a few bucks on a MagnaFlow NEO Series Cat-Back Performance Exhaust System and tbh it was a nightmare. The AFM valves kept throwing codes and it ran way hotter than I expected. Honestly, I'm pretty cautious now and think sticking to your 5k budget for a pro install is the only way to avoid the CEL headache. Quick tip: definitely get a system with thermal ceramic coating to protect your trunk lining!!
Subbing for updates
Honestly, I was in your same shoes and went with the Borla S-Type Cat-Back Exhaust for C8 Corvette with NPP. It's basically the perfect middle ground for a daily driver imo. I stayed away from the Borla ATAK Cat-Back Exhaust for C8 Corvette cuz I was worried about it being too raspy, but the S-Type is deep and muscle-y without being annoying on the freeway. Plus, it keeps the NPP valves so my neighbors dont hate me lol. I skipped the high-flow cats to avoid warranty drama, and it's plenty loud enough! Definitely get a pro to handle the AFM valve relearn tho, it's kinda tricky.
No way, I literally just dealt with this yesterday. Small world.
Just catching up on all the advice here and honestly, I am in the exact same position as you. I have been staring at my stock exhaust for three months now, wanting to swap it out myself, but I am terrified of throwing a code or having those heat issues some of you mentioned. It is basically a choice between that deep muscle tone and potentially melting my trunk lining or dealing with annoying AFM valves. I really want to do this as a weekend project but the more I read, the more I feel like I am just gonna end up stuck with a quiet car forever because there isnt a clear-cut winner for a DIYer. It is super frustrating that there is no perfect middle ground that is 100% safe to install at home without a dealer trip...
Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.
