I just picked up a new Chevy Colorado and I'm itching to hit some local trails! I'm specifically looking for advice on essential recovery gear and skid plates. I want to ensure I'm protected without overspending. What are your must-have off-road mods for this truck that offer the best bang for your buck?

In my experience, you definitely dont need to drop a fortune to get trail-ready. I've been super satisfied with my setup and it's literally saved my undercarriage multiple times. For skid plates, I looked at a few options before buying: - Chevrolet Performance Steel Mid Skid Plate 84962649: This is what I've got. It's basically tank armor and fits perfectly since it's OEM. Kinda heavy, but its way cheaper than some custom boutique brands.
- CBI Offroad Fab Chevy Colorado Front Skid Plate: These are realy nice if ur worried about weight since they're aluminum, but they're definitely a bigger investment upfront. For recovery gear, honestly just get a Bubba Rope Renegade 3/4" x 20' Kinetic Recovery Rope. Its way better than a stiff tow strap cuz it stretches and wont jerk ur frame around. I also keep some ARB TRED Pro Recovery Boards in the bed just in case. They work well for solo trips! Anyway, gl with the new truck!! Peace 👍

Respectfully, I'd consider another option for the skids. Most people jump straight to steel, but honestly, unless you're rock crawling every weekend, it's just dead weight that'll eventually rust. I highkey think aluminum is the better 'bang for your buck' play long-term because it won't kill your fuel economy or sag your front end. I've been running the Victory 4x4 Chevy Colorado Front Blitz Skid Plate and it's amazing... 1/4 inch thick so it's super beefy but way lighter than the steel alternatives!! Also, for recovery gear, you don't gotta drop $200 on a kinetic rope right away. Tbh, a solid static strap like the Rhino USA 3" x 20' Recovery Tow Strap works great for basic trail pulls. Pair that with some GearAmerica 5/8" Synthetic Soft Shackle 2-Pack instead of heavy metal D-rings. It's basically a pro setup for half the cost. Anyway, just my two cents! You're gonna love that truck on the trails... gl! 👍

^ This. Also, im honestly a bit disappointed to see nobody mentioning frame-mounted recovery points yet. All the armor in the world wont help if you're buried in deep mud and dont have a solid place to hook a rope. Unfortunately, those factory loops are not as good as expected for actual recovery work... they're mostly for tie-downs and i've seen them fail under heavy load. If you want real reliability, just get any recovery kit from ARB. You really cant go wrong with their stuff. I had issues with some off-brand straps fraying after one use and it was just a waste of money. Honestly, if you're hitting trails alone, you should just go with Warn for a winch and call it a day. Their gear is built to a much higher standard than the cheap knockoffs you see on Amazon. Just stick to the big names for the safety stuff and you'll be fine...

Congrats on the truck! I've been wheeling Colorados for ten years and honestly, my current setup saved my oil pan last season. Check out ColoradoFans for technical data on plate thickness... it's a huge resource. Just be careful with mounting designs. You wanna make sure the hardware is recessed, or you'll just shear the bolt heads off on the first rock you slide over, you know? Good luck!
