Hey everyone! I recently picked up a 2021 Challenger Scat Pack, and while I’m absolutely obsessed with the power of the 392 Hemi, I feel like the stock setup is a bit too muffled. I’m looking to upgrade to a cold air intake to really let that engine breathe and hopefully get some of that aggressive induction noise when I’m wide open.
I’ve been doing some research, but I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the options. I’ve seen a lot of people swearing by the JLT Series 2 for pure performance, while others seem to love the aesthetics of the Legmaker carbon fiber intakes. I’m also curious about the Mopar performance intake since it keeps things looking somewhat OEM. My main concern is heat soak—I don't want to spend $500 just to suck in hot engine air and lose horsepower. I’ve also heard mixed things about whether an open-box design is better for sound versus a closed-box for actual temperature control.
My budget is around $400-$600, and I’m looking for something that’s a straightforward bolt-on. For those of you running a 6.4L, which intake gave you the best balance of sound, looks, and actual throttle response? Is there a specific setup you’d recommend for a daily driver?
For your situation, I would suggest looking at the aFe Power Magnum FORCE Stage-2 Cold Air Intake System with Pro 5R Filter. It is a solid middle ground between the open-box sound and heat management. Tbh, heat soak is definitely a real concern with these 6.4L engines, so make sure to get the optional aFe Power Dynamic Air Scoop to force more outside air in. It keeps the throttle response snappy without breaking the $500 mark!
Seconding the recommendation above regarding heat soak! Before you drop $500, you gotta understand that these 392s are massive heat sinks. A fancy tube wont help if it's sucking in 150-degree air. Honestly, the most cost-effective move for a daily is the Hellcat Lower Air Box 68175164AC combined with the Mopar Intake Tube 68235210AA. It uses the headlight port for true cold air, keeps that OEM look you mentioned, and stays well under your $400 budget. Best of both worlds, IMO!
Hey! First off, congrats on the 2021 Scat Pack! That 392 Hemi is absolutely amazing, right? I totally get what you mean about the stock sound—it’s a bit too quiet for such a beastly engine.
In my experience, if you want that perfect mix of incredible induction noise and solid performance without breaking the bank, I would suggest the JLT Performance Series 2 Cold Air Intake for 2011-2023 Dodge Challenger 6.4L. Honestly, I’ve been running this setup for a while now and the sound when you hit WOT (wide open throttle) is just fantastic! It really lets that hemi scream.
I was worried about heat soak too, since it’s an open-box style, but the heat shield does a pretty decent job. If you’re really paranoid about temps for a daily driver, the Mopar Cold Air Intake System for 6.4L HEMI Challenger is a great choice because it integrates with the hood scoop or headlight intake, keeping things cooler. But, truth be told, for the "fun factor" and throttle response, the JLT is hard to beat for around $400.
Also, have you looked into the Legmaker Intakes LMI Carbon Fiber True V2 Cold Air Intake? It looks stunning in the engine bay, though it might push your budget a bit. Seriously though, for a daily, the JLT is a straightforward bolt-on that you’ll love every time you step on it! Have you decided if you’re gonna do the install yourself or take it to a shop? It's a fun weekend project! Good luck!
Jumping in because I have tried a few of these and frankly they were a letdown. Most cold air setups are pretty disappointing when you see how much they heat soak in traffic. Wasted a lot of cash chasing sound and ended up regretful.
Ive been logging IATs on my Hemis for years and basically realized that most cold air setups are just expensive noise makers. I remember back when I got my first Scat, I wasted so much money on an open filter only to see my temps skyrocket at every red light. If you want the actual technical win while staying under budget, heres the move:
Just found this thread and man, I feel your pain so much! Its such a struggle trying to get that perfect balance of sound without killing your performance because of the heat. I have been working on my own cars for decades and the 392 is a total beast, but it gets so incredibly hot under there fast!
