Hey everyone! I finally did it—I pulled the trigger on a new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, and I couldn’t be more stoked. I’ve been a fan from the sidelines for years, and now that it’s actually sitting in my driveway, the excitement is starting to turn into a bit of "analysis paralysis" when it comes to modifications.
The Rubicon is obviously incredibly capable right off the lot with the lockers and the electronic sway bar disconnect, but I want to make sure I’m properly equipped before I hit the more technical trails. I’m planning a trip out to Moab later this year, and I also want to do some light overlanding through the Sierras. I’m looking for a balance between making it a beast off-road while keeping it somewhat civilized as my daily driver.
I’ve been looking into recovery gear first because I don't want to be "that guy" who gets stuck without a plan. Should I prioritize a high-quality winch like a Warn Zeon right away, or is that overkill for a beginner? Also, I’m really torn on the armor situation. The stock rock rails seem decent, but should I be looking into more comprehensive underbody skid plates for the oil pan and transmission? I'm terrified of a stray rock ending my trip early.
Another thing I'm debating is the tire situation. The stock tires look okay, but everyone in my local club seems to say that 35s are the "sweet spot" for the Rubicon. If I go that route, do I absolutely need a 2.5-inch lift to avoid rubbing, or can I get away with the factory setup for a while? I really want to avoid the "mall crawler" look and focus on functional, durable upgrades that actually make a difference when the terrain gets tough.
I have a decent budget set aside, but I’d rather "buy once, cry once" than get cheap gear that fails on the trail. For those of you who have been wheeling Rubicons for a while, what are the absolute essential off-road accessories you’d recommend starting with?
yo, congrats on the Rubicon! i totally feel u on the analysis paralysis. honestly, i'm still like a total beginner at this but i've already had some pretty big disappointments with gear. For your situation, here's what i recommend based on my own failed experiences: - Skid plates are NOT optional. i shoulda bought the MetalCloak Jeep JL Wrangler Underbody Skid Plate System right away. the stock ones just dont cut it and i actually dented my pan last month... so bummed.
- Recovery is huge. i bought a cheap winch and it literally died the first time i needed it. if u can swing it, the Warn Zeon 10-S Winch with Synthetic Rope is the one to get.
- I tried running BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 35x12.50R17 tires without a lift and unfortunately the rubbing was realy bad. You basically need a TeraFlex 2.5 Inch Performance Spacer Lift Kit to do Moab right. anyway, hope that helps! gl!
Curious about one thing: what's your factory axle ratio? I mean, I unfortunately had issues with a Smittybilt X20 Gen2 10K Winch failing mid-pull, so I totally get the 'buy once' vibe. Before comparing the Warn Zeon 12-S Platinum Winch vs the Comeup Seal Gen2 9.5rs, I gotta know if you're doing high-clearance fenders? Basically, stock fenders (Option A) rub 35s at flex, while high-clearance (Option B) lets you skip the lift. Thoughts?
I ran into similar issues when I first started out with my current setup. Here is what I learned from trial and error:
