I recently picked up a Land Rover Discovery and I’m ready to kit it out for camping. I’m stuck between a full platform like Front Runner or just simple crossbars. It needs to support a heavy rooftop tent and extra gear. Does anyone have experience with wind noise or mounting issues? What’s your go-to rack for this rig?
Dynamic loads kill bars. Try the Yakima LockNLoad Platform instead; it offers better structural integrity and weight distribution than basic Thule WingBar Evo bars while staying budget-friendly... good luck!

In my experience, honestly, dropping $1,500+ on those high-end platforms is sometimes a total waste of cash, especially if youre just starting out. I had a super expensive setup on my last rig and the wind noise was *insane*... basically sounded like a jet engine on the highway. Plus, the mounting was a nightmare on the Discovery's stepped roof. Not as good as I expected for the price, right?
If youre looking for a budget-friendly way to support a heavy RTT without the "Land Rover tax," check out the Rhino-Rack Pioneer Platform (52107). Pair it with the Rhino-Rack RL210S2 Gutter Mount Legs and you can usually get the whole setup for under $950. Crossbars are cheaper, sure, but they lowkey flex way too much under a tent. Stick to a platform, but dont overpay for the brand name. gl!
- Tents actually need high dynamic ratings.
- Make sure to avoid bars; they basically cant handle the stress.
- I suggest the Front Runner Slimline II Roof Rack Kit for safety.
