what are the absolute must-have mods to actually fix the performance on a new Type R because honestly im so fed up with the overheating already. i just got this fl5 in phoenix and the heat soak is just killing me after two pulls. ive got a track day in three weeks and about 2k saved up. what should i prioritize...

Yo! Phoenix is absolutely brutal on these cars but you gotta get that beast ready for the track! If you really want to protect the car and keep the power from dropping off, you need to look at how the air is getting in and how your brakes handle that desert heat. Reliability is everything when you're pushing those limits in 100 plus degrees...

  • Eventuri Carbon Fiber Intake System for FL5 Civic Type R
  • This thing is amazing for keeping intake temps stable because the housing is actually sealed off from engine bay heat. Total game changer for heat soak issues.
  • Castrol React SRF Racing Brake Fluid 1L
  • Absolute must-have for track safety. It wont boil when things get scorching hot like some of the cheaper fluids. I love seeing another FL5 getting tracked! Just make sure you're monitoring those temps religiously and dont push it too hard if things look sketchy. You're gonna have a blast!

Logging my IATs religiously showed a 15-degree drop just by managing radiant heat. Honestly, I'm super satisfied with this setup now.

^ This. Also, unfortunately, simply upgrading the core volume of the radiator or intercooler isnt a total fix for Phoenix track conditions. Honestly, Ive seen data logs where those larger cores actually obstructed airflow to the rest of the engine bay, causing oil temps to spike even faster than stock. Its frustrating that a car marketed for the track struggles so much with basic thermal management in our climate. If you want to survive three weeks from now, focus on these specific points:

  • Oil Temperature Control: The factory liquid-to-liquid heat exchanger is way too small for high-load sessions. I suggest the HKS Oil Cooler Kit Honda Civic Type R FL5 as it provides dedicated airflow away from the radiator stack.
  • Airflow Velocity: The stock honeycomb grill is incredibly restrictive. You should swap to the Dream Automotive Track Front Grille FL5 to increase the pressure differential and get more CFM to the radiators.
  • Software Management: Use a Hondata FlashPro FL5 Civic Type R to adjust your radiator fan trigger temps. The stock ECU waits until the car is already baking to ramp up the fans, which is useless in our heat. Tbh, without addressing the oil and the fan duty cycles, youre just putting a band-aid on a bigger airflow problem.
