Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Mercedes GLE450 and I’m absolutely loving the ride, but I’m running into a bit of a space issue now that camping season is here. My family and I are planning a few trips into the mountains, and between the tent, sleeping bags, and a large cooler, the trunk is already bursting at the seams. I’m looking for the best roof rack system that balances utility with the car’s sleek look.

I’m specifically curious about whether I should stick with the official Mercedes-Benz basic carrier bars or if aftermarket options like Thule or Yakima are better for heavy-duty camping gear. I’m a bit worried about wind noise on the highway and how much these systems might affect the fuel efficiency of the GLE. Also, does anyone have experience with how easy these are to install on the flush roof rails? I’d prefer something I can take on and off without too much hassle.

Does anyone have a specific model or setup they’ve used for hauling cargo boxes or recovery boards on their GLE450 that they’d recommend?

For your Mercedes GLE450, the Thule WingBar Evo is a top-tier choice for camping adventures. It’s highly aerodynamic, significantly reducing wind noise during those long highway drives to the campsite. If you’re hauling heavy gear or a rooftop tent, the Yakima LockNLoad platform is best-in-class; its rugged, flat deck is incredibly versatile for mounting recovery boards and water jugs. Pair either with a Thule Motion 3 XL cargo box to keep your essentials dry. Just be mindful: some aftermarket rack setups may interfere with the panoramic sunroof operation!

I went through this last year when I first got my GLE. Honestly, I was super paranoid about safety because the last thing you want is a loaded cargo box shifting at 75 mph on the highway, right? I looked at the OEM bars, but for my peace of mind, I ended up going with the Thule WingBar Edge Roof Rack System for Mercedes GLE because the fitment on those flush rails feels incredibly secure. It literally feels like part of the car's frame once it's torqued down.

I mean, I've hauled a massive Thule Motion XT XXL Cargo Box fully loaded with camping gear through some pretty gnarly mountain winds and it didn't budge. You'll definitely hear a little whistle if the sunroof is open, but with it closed, it's basically silent. My MPG dropped maybe 2-3 points, but that's a fair trade for the reliability imo. Plus, they're sooo much easier to take off than I expected once you get the hang of it. Have you looked into the weight limits for your specific tent setup yet? gl!

For your situation, I have spent literally way too much time obsessing over the market data and technical specs on this exact topic lol. WATCH OUT for generic universal mounts that claim to fit any flush rail!! Seriously, those flush rails on the GLE450 are gorgeous, but they are super specific. If you get a cheap clamp that isnt contoured exactly for the Mercedes profile, youre looking at potential paint damage or—total nightmare fuel—it loosening up while ur doing 75 on the highway. Always, always check the vehicle-specific fit kits.

From a market research perspective, the official Benz bars are actually a solid value play cuz they're made by a top-tier manufacturer but branded for the car. However, if you want that ultra-low profile look to keep the "sleek" vibe you mentioned, you gotta look at the premium aerodynamic lines from brands like Yakima or Rhino-Rack. I've found that the Yakima setups often use a more rounded bar which is AMAZING for cutting down that annoying whistling sound.

In my experience, you’re gonna lose maybe 1-2 MPG with just the bars, but once you throw a massive cargo box or recovery boards up there? Expect a 3-5 MPG hit easy. I LOVE the T-slot systems though—they make it so easy to swap between a box for camping and brackets for recovery boards in like five minutes. Honestly, if you want something easy to take on and off, look for the systems with the "power click" or quick-dial mounts. It makes the whole process so much less of a headache when you just want to get home and wash the car after a mountain trip! Good luck with the build, the GLE is a fantastic platform for this stuff!! peace

sooo i actually went with the official benz bars for mine and im super happy with them. i think they’re actually cheaper than some thule setups?? tbh they fit the flush rails *perfectly*. not sure about the exact mpg loss but it doesn't seem too bad. install is kinda easy once u get the hang of it... definately better than cramming that cooler in the back lol. good luck!!
