Where can I find reliable dealers selling rare Mercedes models?

Honestly I am so fed up with the local guys here in Jersey. I've spent the last six months trying to find a clean R129 SL600 with the V12 but every single high-end lot I go to is just a bunch of guys in shiny suits trying to push me into a 2022 lease I dont want. Like, I tell them I want a specific 90s classic and they look at me like I have three heads or they try to show me some beat up project car with potential that actually just has a blown hydraulic suspension and a leaking roof. Im literally ready to throw my laptop out the window because every time a decent one pops up on those big auction sites it goes for double what its worth or the seller disappears the second I ask for a PPI. It is so frustrating because I finally have the cash ready—ive got about 110k saved up specifically for this and I want to get it done before the summer starts so I can actually drive it instead of just staring at pictures of other peoples cars. I am super excited to finally pull the trigger but the gatekeepers are making it impossible to find anything that isnt a total disaster or priced for a museum. I even flew out to Florida last week to see a pristine 560SEC and the thing had rust bubbles under the rear window that the dealer somehow missed in the photos. I wasted a thousand bucks on a flight and a hotel for nothing and it makes me so angry that people can be that dishonest. Is there anywhere that actually specializes in the rare stuff without the typical sleazy dealer vibes? I dont care if I have to ship it from California or even import it at this point I just want someone who actually knows what an M120 engine is and doesnt lie about the service history. I need a place that actually vets their inventory properly and maybe handles some of the harder to find AMG models too because I might be open to a pre-merger car if the price is right. Where are you guys actually finding the real gems? I need a name that isnt just some random guy on Facebook marketplace or a dealership that mostly sells Altimas...

> I wasted a thousand bucks on a flight and a hotel for nothing Saw this and had to jump in. To add to the point above: if you want to keep more of that 110k for maintenance, skip the big boutiques and get a Mercedes-Benz Club of America Membership for their private classifieds. You honestly get way better deals from enthusiasts who arent trying to flip for a huge profit. Just get an inspection first.

I have been looking at the technical data for these R129 V12s for a while now because the ADS II suspension and the wiring harness issues on the early 90s models are a total minefield. If you are looking to spend that kind of cash, you really need a dealer that actually understands the M120 engine architecture and the specific maintenance needs of these 12-cylinder cars.

  • Mechatronik Engineering Mercedes-Benz SL600 R129
  • These guys are the absolute top tier. Pros: They do full mechanical restorations and their technical vetting is basically factory-level. Cons: Located in Germany, so you have to handle the import paperwork and shipping, which is a headache if you want it by summer.
  • Performance Auto Gallery Rare Classics
  • They are in Maryland, so its a relatively short drive from Jersey. Pros: They specialize in 80s and 90s enthusiast cars and actually encourage PPIs. Cons: Their turn-over is high and they dont always have a V12 in stock.
  • LBI Limited Collector Automobiles
  • Based in Philly and Pontiac. Pros: They focus on transparency and high-quality photography so you dont get surprised by rust bubbles like you did in Florida. Cons: They tend to stock more investment grade stuff, so the prices might be pushing your 110k ceiling. Just a tip... definitely check the date codes on those hydraulic accumulators before you sign anything. If they havent been replaced recently, you are looking at a messy repair right out of the gate regardless of how clean the car looks. Good luck with the search tho.

I've been super happy with The MB Market for my collection. The guys there actually know what an M120 engine is, which is rare. If you want a physical dealer for that Mercedes-Benz SL600 R129 V12, check out DriverSource in Houston. I bought a pre-merger car from them and it was exactly as described. No suits, just real enthusiasts who wont waste your time. Always ask for a VMI report first tho.
