Recommendations for the best heavy-duty winch for a Ram 2500 Power Wagon?

Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger on a newer Ram 2500 Power Wagon, and while I love the truck, I am looking to upgrade the recovery setup. The factory 12,000 lb Warn winch is decent for general use, but I have been getting into some pretty gnarly situations lately involving deep mud and moving heavy fallen timber on my property. I am worried that with the sheer weight of this beast plus a full load, I might need something with more pulling power and better thermal management for long, hard pulls.

I have been looking at a few options, but I am really torn between sticking with a high-end Warn Zeon or branching out to something like a ComeUp or a Sherpa. Here are a few things I am specifically looking for:

  • A minimum of 15,000 lb or 16,500 lb capacity to ensure a solid safety margin.
  • Compatibility with the factory hidden winch mount or advice on which aftermarket bumpers actually fit the big units.
  • High-quality synthetic line that can handle the abrasion of my local terrain.

I really do not want to get stranded in the backcountry because I stuck with gear that was right on the edge of its limit. Does anyone here have experience swapping out the stock Power Wagon winch for something significantly heavier duty? What would you recommend as the absolute best winch for a truck this size?

Congrats on the new Power Wagon! Honestly, you are totally right to be thinking about more capacity. A loaded 2500 in deep mud can easily exceed a 12k rating due to suction and weight. I went through a similar upgrade and settled on the Warn 16.5ti-S Heavyweight Series Winch. Its a total beast with way better thermal management than the Zeon series for those long pulls you mentioned. If you want to try something different, the Sherpa Steed 17000lb Winch is also incredible because it stays cool forever even during heavy timber clearing. One thing tho... fitting these into the stock hidden mount is a nightmare because they are physically much larger. Most guys end up switching to the AEV Ram 2500/3500 Winch Bumper to handle the size of a 16.5k unit. Make sure you get a high-end line like Warn Spydura Nightline Synthetic Winch Rope too. Its worth the peace of mind when youre solo.

Just catching up on this thread... honestly the most important thing ive learned is that a huge winch is only as good as your power supply. I nearly fried my electronics before upgrading to a Superwinch Talon 18.0SR 18000lb Winch with Synthetic Rope. It handles the weight of a 2500 easily, but dont forget to budget for a secondary battery too. Safety first, especially when moving heavy timber alone.

hey, honestly youre smart to look beyond the stock 12k. if youre doing heavy timber work on your property, you really need something that wont overheat during long pulls. id suggest checking out the ComeUp Seal Gen2 16.5rs Winch. its got a 16,500 lb capacity and the thermal sensors are top notch, which is huge for safety when youre working the truck hard in deep mud. just a heads up tho, the factory hidden mount is pretty cramped. most guys find that moving to a 16.5k unit requires a different setup, so id look at the AEV Prospector Front Bumper for a solid fit. for the line, Master Pull Superline XD Synthetic Winch Line is basically bulletproof against abrasion. definitely grab a heavy-duty fairlead too, like the Factor 55 1.5 Inch Hawse Fairlead, to keep everything smooth. better safe than sorry when youre dealing with that much weight... things get sketchy fast if the gear fails.
