Hey everyone! I finally took the plunge and joined the Power Wagon family with a new Ram 2500. It’s an absolute beast off-road, but I’ve quickly realized I need a solid bed cover to protect my recovery gear and camping equipment from both the elements and sticky fingers.
I’m specifically looking for something that can handle the vibration and frame flexing when I’m out hitting the trails. Since the Power Wagon sits quite high, ease of access is a big factor for me. I’ve been debating between a hard tri-fold like the BAKFlip or maybe a heavy-duty retractable cover, but I’m worried about losing too much bed space near the bulkhead or having the tracks get jammed up with dust and grit.
Does anyone here have experience with how certain brands hold up against trail dust and mud when you're aired down? Also, if you have the Rambox system, did that limit your mounting options significantly? I really want something durable that won't rattle like crazy every time I hit a washboard road or a rocky technical section. For those of you who actually put your Power Wagons through their paces, which specific bed cover has stood up to the abuse without failing or leaking?
in my experience, I suggest avoiding pricey retractables. I spent $1,500 on one and unfortunately the trail grit jammed the tracks instantly. I switched to the BAKFlip G2 Hard Folding Truck Bed Cover for about $1,000 and it’s been much better. It handles the Power Wagon's frame flex without rattling like crazy. basically, the simple tri-fold design is way more durable for mud. lesson learned: simple is better for trails!!
> I’m specifically looking for something that can handle the vibration and frame flexing when I’m out hitting the trails. Late to the party but I've been wheeling HD Rams for over a decade and the flex on these Power Wagons is no joke when you're fully crossed up. I've literally seen rail systems pop out of alignment on some setups. Before I give full advice tho, quick question—are you actually running the Ramboxes?? It totally changes your mounting geometry cuz you lose that inner rail lip, and honestly, it limits ur options big time. I'm super satisfied with the DiamondBack HD Truck Bed Cover on my current rig. It’s basically a vault. It doesn't rely on those thin tracks that get clogged with silt, and it handles the twisting motion way better than a standard tri-fold. Plus, I can haul 1,600 lbs on top of it. Another solid pick is the Lomax Hard Tri-Fold Cover if you want something lower profile. It's pretty quiet on washboards and doesnt leak much, but let me know about the bed specs first cuz that's the real dealbreaker for most brands!!
Curious about one thing: whats your budget? Hard covers can bind when the frame flexes, so I'm wondering if you've looked at the Gator ETX Soft Tri-Fold Truck Bed Cover yet? It's reallyyy affordable.
Like someone mentioned, those retractables are a total nightmare once the grit gets in the tracks! I am still pretty new to the Power Wagon life but I love it so far. One thing I have learned is that you really have to watch out for the plastic components on many of these covers. If you are doing technical trails, the frame flex will pop those plastic clips and hinges right off. Its honestly a huge safety concern if your gear starts sliding around or the cover comes loose while you are aired down. I would really suggest looking into a heavy duty aluminum diamond plate cover instead of the standard fiberglass or plastic ones. They are built way tougher and can actually handle the weight if you need to strap a spare tire or some traction boards on top. Just make sure the mounting brackets are solid steel... those cheap aluminum clamps are gonna fail you on the first washboard road you hit! It is amazing how much these trucks vibrate once you get off the pavement.
