What are the must-have accessories for a new Volvo XC60?

Hey everyone! I just joined the Volvo family last week after picking up a brand new XC60 in Thunder Grey. I am absolutely loving the ride so far—the Bowers & Wilkins sound system is incredible and the seats are easily the most comfortable I have ever sat in. I am coming from an older sedan, so having this much space is a bit of a game changer for me.

Since this is my first luxury SUV, I really want to make sure I am taking care of it and setting it up for success right from the start. I have two young kids and a golden retriever who loves the mud, so interior protection is my top priority. I have been looking at the official Volvo accessories catalog, but it is a bit overwhelming and some of the prices are definitely premium.

I am currently looking at a few specific items:

  • The heavy-duty plastic floor liners (the ones that cover the middle tunnel too)
  • A protective steel grille for the cargo area to keep the dog from jumping into the back seats
  • A reversible cargo mat for the trunk that won't let spills soak into the carpet

I am also curious about the roof load bars. We do a bit of kayaking in the summer, but I am worried about the wind noise if I leave them on all the time. Are the OEM ones quiet, or should I look at something like Thule? Also, are there any small quality of life things I might be missing, like center console organizers or screen protectors for that big vertical tablet display? I noticed it picks up fingerprints like crazy.

I want to get the most out of this car without cluttering it up with stuff I do not need. For those of you who have had your XC60 for a while, what are the absolute must-have accessories that you actually use every day, and are there any that you regret buying? I would love to hear your recommendations before I go spend a bunch of money at the dealership!

Jumping in here with some technical specs for you. Since you mentioned the kids and the dog, you definitely want to prioritize the fit of those mats. I went with the Volvo XC60 Plastic Floor Trays and Tunnel Cover because they actually use the factory mounting points. Some third-party mats can slide around, which is a bit of a safety risk near the pedals imo. For the roof bars, the Volvo ones are solid, but if you are worried about noise, check out the Thule WingBar Edge Roof Rack System. They sit a bit lower and are shaped specifically to cut down on that whistling sound you get at highway speeds. They are basically the gold standard for aero bars. Also, regarding that screen, get a tempered glass protector. I use the Spigen Glas.tR EZ Fit Screen Protector for Volvo XC60 and it helps a lot with the fingerprints and glare. Better to protect that expensive display now than deal with scratches later... it is a pricey part to replace if it gets dinged up.

Had a moment to think about this and I actually have to disagree on the OEM trays if you want total protection. While the Volvo ones fit the studs perfectly, they basically lack the side wall height needed for deep mud or slush. From a technical standpoint, you want something like TuxMat Volvo XC60 Custom Fit Floor Mats. These provide much higher vertical coverage, which prevents liquid from seeping behind the plastic trim where it can hit the sensitive wiring looms tucked under the floor. For the trunk, instead of the reversible mat, I would suggest the WeatherTech Cargo Liner High-Performance Trunk Mat. It has a much deeper reservoir. If the dog is really muddy or a kid spills a giant drink, that raised lip is the only thing keeping it off your actual interior. Its kinda pricey, but way easier to hose off than trying to clean a fabric-backed mat.

Just found this thread. I've been really satisfied with how mine has held up, but coming from a safety-first mindset, I've got a few warnings about going the cheap route with accessories.

  • Volvo vs Generic Mats: I'd stick with brands that use the factory floor pins. Universal ones are a huge liability if they slide under the pedals. It isnt worth the small savings tbh.
  • Airbag Safety: If you're looking at seat protection for the kids or the dog, make sure it is side-airbag compatible. Some heavy-duty covers block the deployment path in the seat bolsters and wont let them fire correctly.
  • Cargo Barriers: A lot of the stuff you find online is just held in by tension. In a collision, a large dog becomes a lot heavier, and those tension bars wont hold. Stick to the steel ones that lock into the actual chassis points.
  • Roof Bars: Factory bars are usually profiled to reduce lift and drag specifically for this roofline. Some generic square bars can create weird vibrations that might mess with the sunroof seal over time. I'm much happier paying the premium for the peace of mind that everything works with the safety systems as intended.

I think the steel grille is a total lifesaver for dog owners, though IIRC it might rattle a tiny bit if not installed perfectly. Definitely worth it though.
