Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a 6th Gen Chevy Camaro SS a few months ago. I’ve been absolutely loving the LT1 power straight off the lot, but now that the honeymoon phase is settling down, I’m starting to get that itch to bolting on some upgrades. It’s my daily driver, but I definitely want to wake it up a bit for weekend cruises and the occasional track day.

Currently, the car is bone stock. I’ve been doing some reading on the forums, and it seems like there are a million different directions I could go. I’m a bit torn between focusing on raw horsepower or starting with handling mods to make it feel more planted in the corners. I’m not looking to go full forced induction just yet—I’d like to keep it naturally aspirated for the time being to maintain some reliability since I depend on it for work.

I’ve been looking at a few Cold Air Inductions (CAI) kits and maybe a ported throttle body to crisp up the throttle response, which feels just a tiny bit laggy to me right now. I’m also considering a secondary cat delete or a full cat-back exhaust system because, let’s be honest, that V8 needs to sing a little louder! My budget is around $2,500 to $3,000 for this first round of mods. I want to make sure I’m spending my money on parts that actually provide a noticeable 'butt-动力' (seat of the pants) difference rather than just engine bay eye candy.

For those of you who have been down this road with the Alpha platform, what would you say are the 'must-have' first three mods for a balance of streetability and performance? Also, do you think a custom tune is absolutely necessary if I just stick to an intake and exhaust for now?

Ok so, congrats on the 6th Gen! I've been running my SS for about three years now and honestly, the Alpha platform is so good out of the box. For your budget, I'd highkey focus on throttle response and sound first since that's what you'll feel daily.

In my experience, the best first move is the Rotofab Cold Air Intake System for 2016-2024 Camaro SS. It literally transforms the engine bay sound and helps with that lag you mentioned. Pair that with a Tony Mamo Ported LT1 Throttle Body and the response is night and day... so much crisper! For the exhaust, since you want it to sing, look at the Borla S-Type Axle-Back Exhaust for Camaro SS. It's perfect for a daily—loud when you want it but no drone on the highway.

tbh, you don't *need* a tune for just those mods, the ECU can handle the extra airflow just fine. Save that money for tires later! good luck 👍

Just sharing my experience: I was in the exact same spot with my 6th Gen last year! NGL, I was obsessed with chasing power until I realized my daily driver needed to actually stop and turn safely too. I skipped the pricey stuff and grabbed a BMR Suspension CB005 Cradle Bushing Lockout Kit for like $200 and some PowerStop Z26 Street Warrior Brake Pad Kit for around $250. It made the car feel SO much more planted and secure without breaking the bank or ruining the ride quality! Definitely recommend looking at those safety/stability bits before going wild on the LT1.

sooo i'd actually suggest a different approach - not to disagree with the first reply, but i think starting with engine mods on the alpha platform can be a bit of a trap if ur actually hitting the track.

TL;DR: Focus on tires and cooling first because the LT1 has plenty of grunt, but the stock run-flats are basically ice skates when they get hot lol.

I gotta warn u though, be careful with the cat delete on a daily driver. Honestly, the smell and the drone on the highway can get real old real fast when youre just trying to get to work. I remember when I first started, I spent a bunch of money on an intake and exhaust, then felt like a total noob at my first track day because I was sliding everywhere while guys with stock power and better tires were gapping me. If you spend that $3k on some sticky Michelin tires and better brake fluid/pads, the car feels SO much more planted. Plus, iirc, a tune is highkey risky for ur warranty on a daily just for a few extra horses... but yeah, just my experience!! peace

Seconding the recommendation above! Tbh, when I first started modding my SS, I wasted cash on flashy parts that did nothing. If you want real gains for under $3k, look into an E85 sensor. Just grab any flex fuel kit from DSX or similar... it's basically the best bang for your buck on the Alpha platform. It wakes the car up way more than just a loud exhaust, you know?

TL;DR: Stick to high-quality bolt-ons that dont mess with your warranty. Go for a closed intake, a refined axle-back, and high-temp brake fluid. I have stayed pretty conservative with my build because I value reliability over everything. I am very satisfied with these three choices for a daily driver that hits the track:

  • Cold Air Inductions Elite Series Cold Air Intake for better temps.
  • AWE Touring Edition Axle-Back Exhaust for a mature V8 sound.
  • Castrol SRF React Racing Brake Fluid for track safety. Compared to the open-element intakes, the Cold Air Inductions box keeps the heat soak away during summer traffic and works well for a daily. The AWE exhaust sounds great and has zero drone on the highway, so I have no complaints there. It sounds way more refined than a simple muffler delete. Most importantly, the brake fluid is a safety necessity if youre tracking it. It works well under pressure and keeps the pedal from going soft after a few laps. You definitely dont need a custom tune for just an intake and axle-back, so keep your money for a set of tires later.
