Hey everyone, I just picked up a recent Dodge Durango R/T with the 5.7L Hemi, and while I’m absolutely loving the stock performance, I’ve definitely got the itch to start adding some upgrades. I want to give it a bit more personality and maybe squeeze out some extra horsepower and better throttle response without going totally overboard right away.
I’ve been looking into a few different things, specifically high-flow cold air intakes and maybe a cat-back exhaust system to get that signature deep Hemi growl. I’ve heard Mopar or Borla are solid choices, but I’m also curious if anyone has real-world experience with a pedal commander or a specific tuner for this platform. Does it actually make a noticeable difference in daily driving, or is it mostly just a placebo effect? I’m really looking for a more aggressive feel and sound rather than building a full-on track beast.
I’m a bit torn on where to start because I don't want to waste money on 'performance' parts that are just for show. My budget for this first round of mods is around $1,500. For those of you who have modded your Durango, which performance accessories gave you the best 'bang for your buck' in terms of real-world power and driving enjoyment?
> I’ve been looking into a few different things, specifically high-flow cold air intakes and maybe a cat-back exhaust system... I’ve heard Mopar or Borla are solid choices... Sooo, I spent years tweaking Hemis and honestly, the exhaust is where the soul is. If ur budget is $1,500, I'd skip the generic stuff and grab a Borla S-Type Cat-Back Exhaust System 140632. It sounds mean as hell without the drone. Pair it with a JLT Cold Air Intake Kit 3021-P for better flow. I learned that sound actually makes it feel faster than any tiny hp gain from a tuner lol. It works well tho!!
Respectfully, I'd consider another option before dropping ur whole budget on a single exhaust system. I mean, I love a good cat-back, but it's basically just paying for expensive plumbing. To get that signature Hemi sound for way less, just swap the mid-mufflers for Flowmaster Super 44 Series Mufflers. It sounds mean as hell and keeps the cost down! Instead of just changing throttle feel, grab the Diablosport inTune i3 Platinum 8245. This actually adds real-world horsepower and lets u tweak the transmission settings, which is highkey better than a pedal commander imo. My budget-friendly starter pack:
- Mid-muffler swap (~$300)
- Diablosport inTune i3 Platinum 8245 (~$450)
- J&L Oil Separator 3.0 Black Anodized (~$160) - keep that intake clean! Honestly, this setup hits way harder than just an intake and cat-back would. gl! 👍
In my experience, factory induction systems prioritize NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) over peak flow, which basically chokes performance. You gotta let it breathe! I installed the Mopar Cold Air Intake 77070043AC (~$450) and its amazing. Plus, the Pedal Commander PC31 ($300) improves throttle mapping... literally a different beast! Just watch the warranty tho, maybe consult a pro first? Best bang for your buck, seriouslyyy!
Ok adding this to my list of things to try. Thanks for the tip!
