So I just got my Maverick and honestly Im terrified of scratching it up or messin something up already. Im moving apartments in about three weeks so I need to make the bed actually useful for hauling boxes and maybe a desk but I have no idea where to start. My logic was just buy whatever the dealer has but then I saw people talking about DIY 2x4s and the FlexBed thing and I am just so lost. I dont even know if I need a tonneau cover or if thats just for looks? I only have like 500 dollars left after the down payment so what are the absolute must haves so my stuff doesnt fly out on the highway...
Re: "First things first, dont panic about the bed...." - tbh I have to disagree with the soft tonneau suggestion. Unfortunately, I had issues with those covers when moving furniture because they just get in the way and block your visibility when folded. Not as good as expected for hauling a desk. If you are worried about boxes flying out, skip the cover and focus on actual stability.
First things first, dont panic about the bed. It is meant to be used but I understand wanting to keep it pristine. Since you are moving soon and on a strict budget, I would suggest skipping the dealer parts. They mark those up way too much. To protect the metal from scratches, I highly recommend getting a Dee Zee Heavy Duty Bed Mat. It is thick rubber and keeps your furniture from sliding into the bulkheads. Be careful with those DIY 2x4s tho... make sure you sand the edges so they dont snag your boxes. Safety is the most important part when hauling on the highway. You absolutely need a reliable set of Rhino USA Ratchet Straps 4-Pack. Never rely on bungee cords for a desk or heavy boxes because they will snap or stretch. As for the tonneau cover, it is mostly for security and rain. If you have 500 dollars left, you could pick up a Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover. It is budget friendly and keeps things dry, but make sure you check the clamps every time you stop. I have seen too many cheap covers fly off because people got lazy with the install. Just take it slow, use your tie-down points, and you will be fine.
