Hey everyone! I recently picked up a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and I’m looking to add some extra utility for road trips. Since my model has the flush side rails, I’m trying to figure out which roof rack system fits the best without creating too much wind noise at highway speeds. I’m mostly planning to carry a cargo box and the occasional bike. Has anyone here installed a rack on their Eclipse Cross? I’d love to know about the fitment and if any brands interfere with the sunroof. Which system would you recommend?
Hello, you can check this article:
So, I actually had a budget rack loosen up on me during a windy bridge crossing a few years back. Scared the crap outta me tbh. Ever since then, I’m HIGHKEY paranoid about safety and weight ratings. For your Eclipse Cross, if youre looking for peace of mind, I’d skip the cheap stuff and go with something that has a really solid locking mechanism.
I think the Yakima SightLine Towers for Flush Side Rails paired with the Yakima JetStream Black 50 inch Crossbars is the way to go. I like these cuz the SightClip system feels way more secure on those specific Mitsubishi flush rails than some of the generic "one size fits all" clamps. Plus, Yakima includes a torque tool so you dont accidentally over-tighten and damage your rails, but you know it’s actually tight enough to not move.
Lesson learned: basically, just double-check the dynamic load capacity of your roof before mounting a heavy box. The Eclipse Cross is solid, but safety is everything when youre hauling gear. Also, always re-torque those bolts after the first 50 miles. Better safe than sorry!! gl!
For your situation, basically I've been running my Eclipse Cross setup for years. First, I tried expensive brands but honestly recommend the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross OEM Roof Rack Crossbars MZ314912. They're around $320 and fit the flush rails perfectly without blocking the sunroof!! You'll save a ton vs Thule tbh. Second, make sure your careful with the install so you dont scratch the paint... i've been there lol. gl!
Saw this earlier but just now responding! In my experience, I’d suggest looking at these:
- Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar Black 2 Bar Roof Rack - Super quiet but pricey.
- Brightlines Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Roof Rack Crossbars - Great budget option.
Honestly, I tried the cheaper ones first but got nervous about the weight limit with a heavy cargo box lol. Just be careful with the sunroof clearance!! Safety first tbh.
Sooo, I saw your post and wanted to chime in from a more technical perspective. Basically, the aerodynamics of your rack matter way more than people think—if you get the wrong profile, you’re gonna deal with that annoying whistling sound the whole drive.
Background info: Flush rails on the Eclipse Cross are great, but they sit low. If you have the panoramic sunroof, clearance is your biggest enemy. Why it matters? Well, some mounting clamps dip low and could literally crack the glass if the bar flexes under load or if you dont check the tolerances first.
Here is what I suggest based on my experience:
• I’m highkey a fan of the Thule WingBar Edge 95cm Silver 9593. It’s an integrated system, so it doesn't overhang the sides. It uses WindDiffuser tech which is basically a textured strip that redirects air. Super quiet.
• If you want more bar space for a cargo box AND a bike, go for the Thule WingBar Evo 118cm Black 711220 paired with the Thule Flush Rail Evo Foot Pack 710600. It gives you extra width for multiple attachments.
• Another solid option is the Yakima JetStream Black 50 Inch Crossbars with Yakima RidgeLine Towers for Flush Rails. The internal "JetFlow" teardrop shape is technically very efficient at highway speeds.
Honestly, those OEM ones mentioned earlier are fine for the price, but the T-track on Thule and Yakima is way smoother for swapping gear. Just be careful with the sunroof—always do a "dry run" opening it slowly after you install everything. gl!
