Does anyone use a radar detector mount in their Panamera?

Hey everyone, I recently picked up a 971 Panamera and I’m absolutely loving the drive, but I’ve quickly realized that this car masks speed way too well. Before I know it, I’m cruising significantly faster than intended, so I’ve decided it’s time to hardwire my Uniden R7.

I’m currently struggling with the best way to mount it. In my previous cars, I usually just used the standard suction cup on the windshield, but the Panamera’s interior feels so refined and the dashboard layout is quite unique. I’m a bit hesitant to stick something right in the middle of the glass because I don’t want to clutter the view or mess with the clean aesthetic of the cabin. Plus, the rearview mirror housing is pretty bulky with all the sensors for the rain-sensing wipers and Assistance systems, so I’m worried about clearance.

I’ve been looking into specialized options like BlendMount or maybe a permanent adhesive mount tucked up high, but I’m curious about the specific geometry of the Panamera’s windshield. I’m also a little concerned about the sun visor clearance—I’d hate to install a mount only to realize I can’t flip the visor down anymore. Has anyone here found a mount that integrates seamlessly without looking like an eyesore?

I’m also wondering about the power source. If you’re using a mount near the mirror, did you tap into the overhead console for power, or did you run a MirrorTap? I’m trying to avoid a messy cord hanging down to the 12V socket if possible. I’d really appreciate seeing some photos of your setups if you have them, especially regarding how much it vibrates while driving on less-than-perfect roads.

Does anyone have a specific brand or DIY mounting position that works perfectly with the Panamera’s mirror stalk and doesn't interfere with the tech sensors?

Works great for me

Spent years tweaking Porsche mirror setups... curious tho, do you have the thermal/noise insulated glass option? It totally changes how I'd suggest mounting it cuz of signal interference and clearance.

Like someone mentioned, the 971 interior really doesnt leave much room for error if you want it looking factory. I am a bit of a data nerd so I actually sat there with a multimeter for two hours checking every pin in the overhead console before I committed to a tap. Basically the thread boils down to:

  • Sturdy aluminum mounts are the winner for stability
  • Hidden wiring is a must for the clean aesthetic
  • Clearance near the sensors is the biggest technical headache I did the install myself and it was a bit nerve-wracking popping those plastic trims off. My current setup for the Uniden R7 Laser Radar Detector sits just low enough to clear the mirror sensors but high enough that the visor doesnt hit it. I even used a tiny bit of foam tape inside the housing to stop a weird vibration I was getting at high speeds. Honestly, checking the clearance with the visor down is the most important step before you tighten everything... I almost forgot and would have been stuck!

To add to the point above: honestly, I've had some pretty disappointing results with those heavy aluminum mirror clamps in the 971. Unfortunately, they hang the detector so low that it actually blocks a chunk of the windshield and just looks cluttered. Plus, the vibration on rougher pavement was driving me nuts. I eventually ripped mine out and went with a much simpler setup that actually looks factory. It cost way less and stays out of the way of the sensors better than the bulky stuff did.

  • Used a MirrorTap MTX-1015 Micro Series to get power directly from the harness behind the mirror.
  • Swapped to a Performance Package Low Profile Mirror Mount which sits much tighter to the housing.
  • Tucked the wire inside the plastic trim so nothing is visible at all. Doing it this way keeps the sensors clear and you can still flip the visor down without hitting the R7. Tapping the power at the mirror plug is definitely the move... just take your time with the probe pins. Its a tight fit but way cleaner than running wires to the fuse box or using the 12v socket. If you need a hand with which wire color is the 12v switched, let me know and I can try to find my notes on the pinout.

Hey, congrats on the 971! I totally get it... that car is so smooth you're doing 90 before you even realize you've left the driveway lol. I'm relatively new to hardwiring stuff myself, but I just went through this exact struggle with my Uniden.

So basically, there are two main ways people go about this, and I've looked at both pretty closely:

1. BlendMount BNR-2017 Custom Radar Detector Mount vs. 2. A simple Permanent Windshield Adhesive Mount for Uniden R7.

* **Option A (The BlendMount):** Honestly, this is the gold standard for a reason. It clips right onto the mirror stalk. It looks super clean and factory, but it is PRICY. Like, over $100 just for a bracket? I was a bit hesitant at first. Also, with the 971's big sensor housing, it can feel a little cramped. Make sure to check your clearance because it *might* sit a bit low and block some visibility if you're tall.
* **Option B (Adhesive Mount):** This is what I actually started with cuz it's cheap (like $15). You tuck it way up high next to the mirror. It doesn't shake at all, but the downside is you can't really adjust it easily once it's stuck there. Plus, the sun visor might hit it if you aren't careful with the placement.

For power, I'd seriously suggest using a MirrorTap MTX-1015 Radar Detector Power Cord. I was scared to pull the overhead console apart, but it's actually not that bad if you go slow. Tapping into the mirror plug means no wires hanging down, which keeps that 'refined' vibe you mentioned. Just be careful with those plastic clips... they're fragile! Honestly, the BlendMount + MirrorTap combo is probably the best value long-term even if it costs more upfront. Good luck! 👍

Sooo, I saw your post and totally get the struggle—the 971 interior is definitely too nice to clutter up with messy wires. From a technical standpoint, you've gotta be careful with the mirror housing clearance.

I've tested a few setups and honestly, BlendMount BNR-2017 Custom Radar Detector Mount is the gold standard for the Panamera. It’s rock solid and uses a high-grade aluminum clamp that fits the 971 mirror stalk perfectly without hitting the plastic trim or sensors. Cheap mounts usually vibrate like crazy, but this one is silent.

If you want a more budget-friendly but still clean look, check out the Radenso Magnetic Suction Cup Mount. It’s technically a windshield mount, but it’s super low profile.

For power, definitely skip the 12V plug. I’m really happy with the MirrorTap MTX Series Radar Detector Hardwire Kit. It lets you tap directly into the powered mirror harness—super clean and takes like 15 minutes. Just a heads up, if you have the thermal glass, signal might be a bit weaker up high, but usually, it's fine.

TL;DR: Go with BlendMount BNR-2017 + MirrorTap MTX-1015 for the cleanest, most professional-looking 971 setup. Works great and no visor issues! gl!

Similar situation here - I was pretty nervous about DIYing anything in my 971 cuz of all those sensors. I tried a cheap MirrorMount Radar Detector Bracket at first, but honestly, it felt shaky and I worried about it stressing the mirror stalk. I ended up having a pro shop do a custom install with a hidden wire just to be safe. It's way more reliable than me guessing which wire to tap in that pricey overhead console!
