I’m beyond excited to finally get my hands on the new Ram 1500 REV, but I’m already starting to plan out my accessories. Since range efficiency is such a big deal with an EV, I’m looking for a bed cover that offers great aerodynamics without sacrificing security. I’m specifically wondering if the bed dimensions and mounting points are identical to the current gas-powered 1500, especially since I’m opting for the RamBox storage system. I’m torn between a low-profile hard folding cover for durability and a retractable one for convenience, but I don't want to lose too much bed space to a canister. For those also pre-ordering, which tonneau covers are you eyeing to keep your gear dry and maximize your range?
Yo! I am absolutely buzzing about the Ram 1500 REV pre-order!! I have been doing a massive deep dive into the technical specs because, like you, I am highkey obsessed with maximizing that range efficiency. Since the REV is built on the STLA Frame platform, the bed dimensions for the 5'7" box with RamBoxes should be nearly identical to the current gas models, BUT... and this is a big but... I would honestly be cautious. Sometimes EV battery packaging slightly alters the floor height or mounting bolt locations. Here is how I see the top options for your setup: 1. BAK Industries BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Truck Bed Cover vs. RetraxPRO XR Retractable Truck Bed Cover * **BAK Industries BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Truck Bed Cover**: * **Pros**: This is fantastic because it has no canister, so you get 100% bed usage. It is super low-profile, which is basically essential for keeping the airflow smooth over the back of the truck to save those precious kWh. * **Cons**: Honestly, it can be a bit heavy to fold up, and if you have it fully open, it blocks the rear-view camera/mirror which is a safety concern for me. * **RetraxPRO XR Retractable Truck Bed Cover**: * **Pros**: The convenience is just amazing! It glides so smooth. Since it has the T-slot rails, you can add a rack later without drilling. * **Cons**: The canister takes up about 10-12 inches of bed space. If you are hauling large gear, that loss is huge. Also, more moving parts mean more potential for failure in freezing temps. Personally, I would suggest the BAKFlip for an EV. It keeps the weight down and the aerodynamics tight without the bulky canister. But seriously, I would recommend a professional consultation with an installer once the truck arrives to ensure the RamBox drainage tracks align perfectly. You dont want water sitting near those electrical components! Good luck, it's gonna be a beast! 👍
> I have been doing a massive deep dive into the technical specs... +1 to what was said earlier. Tbh, I had issues with expensive covers before; they weren't as good as expected. From a value perspective, the Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold Truck Bed Cover is a solid choice. It's much cheaper than hard versions. Unfortunately, it's less secure, but it still provides the aero benefits for range. Hopefully the bed fits! gl.
sooo i totally get the excitement!! i'm also waiting on a pre-order but ngl, i've had some pretty annoying experiences with tonneau covers on my current gas ram with ramboxes. it’s honestly such a tricky setup to get right without losing functionality. Basically, from what I’ve gathered through the tech specs, the bed dimensions and mounting points for the REV are supposed to be identical to the current gas-powered 1500 (the DT platform), especially since the RamBox rails are a carryover part. But here's the thing... i've been looking at how aero affects the drag coefficient, and even a small gap can totally kill your EV range on the highway. I'm worried about that highkey. Here’s what i’ve found after dealing with some issues on my current rig: 1. I tried a retractable cover from one of the major brands recently and unfortunately it was not as good as expected. The canister took up waaaay too much space. In an EV where you're already worried about weight and utility, losing that front section of the bed feels like a mistake. 2. For the best range efficiency, a low-profile hard folding cover is probably your best bet because it sits flush with the rails. It minimizes turbulence way better than a roll-up. 3. Honestly, just go with Bak. You can't really go wrong with their stuff for the RamBox system. Or maybe look at any of the hard folders from Gator if you want something a bit simpler. I had issues with my last one leaking near the tailgate though, which was super disappointing... i mean, for the price you pay, things should stay dry, right?? Do you know if the REV bed has different drainage holes? anyway, gl with the new truck!! it’s gonna be sick. 👍
Honestly, I am gonna have to disagree with the suggestion for a soft cover. Putting a $300 vinyl cover on a high-tech REV just feels wrong, and tbh, the fluttering at highway speeds definately kills any tiny aero gains you are looking for. I have been doing some market research on how these brands are pivotting for EVs, and you realy want something with a tighter seal to keep that drag coefficient low. Since you're worried about the RamBox and bed space, here are a few alternatives I have been tracking: * DiamondBack SE Bed Cover - This is the gold standard for security. It is basically a vault. It doesnt sit inside the bed like a retractable, so you dont lose that canister space you were worried about.
* UnderCover Lux One-Piece Cover - If you want the absolute best range, a painted one-piece is king for aero. It creates a smooth surface across the back. It is a bit of a pain if you need to haul tall stuff, but it looks more high-end than a folding setup.
* Lomax Professional Series - Very low profile and sits flush with the rails. It looks OEM and doesnt have the bulk of most hard covers. Most these brands are still finalizing 2025 specs, but since the REV bed is a carryover DT design, these should fit perfectly tho.
