I just picked up a new Crosstrek Wilderness and I am dying to hit some moderate trails. I really want to make sure I do not damage the undercarriage while exploring.

I am currently looking at:

  • Aluminum skid plates
  • Ditch light brackets
  • Recovery boards

What are the must-have off-road accessories you would recommend first for this specific trim?

Ive been thinking about this for a bit, and honestly, while armor is great for peace of mind, I kind of disagree that it should be the absolute first priority. Ditch lights look cool, but you probably wont be wheeling in the dark right away anyway. If you really want to keep the car safe, you need to manage your tire pressure. Airing down makes the ride way smoother and stops the car from jarringly bouncing off obstacles, which protects your suspension components way more than a skid plate will. I always carry a VIAIR 88P Portable Compressor Kit so I can air back up before the drive home. Also, if you are going solo, a Garmin inReach Mini 2 Satellite Communicator is a must. Knowing you can call for help if you break down or get stuck is the ultimate safety accessory, ngl. Just some practical thoughts for ya.

I compared the Primitive Racing Full Armor Skid Plate Kit Subaru Crosstrek and LP Aventure Main Skid Plate Subaru Crosstrek. Primitive is beefier for safety, whereas LP is kinda just flashy.

Saw this earlier but just getting to it now. Since you mentioned the undercarriage, dont forget the rear diff—the stock one is basically a soda can. I suggest the Rival 4x4 Aluminum Rear Differential Skid Plate Subaru Crosstrek for solid protection. Also, for recovery, I wouldnt go anywhere without MAXTRAX MKII Recovery Boards Safety Orange. They're pricey but they wont snap when you actually need them on a trail.
