I just picked up a 2024 RS 6 and honestly I'm totally overwhelmed with all the car talk online. I've been reading forums for hours and I literally have no idea what half these words even mean like what even is a stage 1 or an intercooler?? My brother says I need to unlock the car but it already feels crazy fast and I dont want to break anything or void my warranty since I just spent a fortune on this thing. I have about 5000 bucks to spend right now since winter is coming up here in Chicago and I want it to actually handle the slush properly. Sorry if this is a really stupid question but what are the absolute basic things I should actually buy first for performance?
Since youre in Chicago and worried about the warranty, the best performance move right now is addressing the seasonal change. Since you have a 5000 budget, prioritize grip over power. The factory tires are basically useless in slush and ice. I strongly recommend getting a dedicated winter set like Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 Winter Tires 285/30R22. This will actually let you use the power you already have without sliding into a curb. For actual mechanical performance without risking your engine warranty, consider a high quality drop-in air filter like the BMC Air Filter High Performance FB01004. It offers a slight improvement in airflow and induction sound without being invasive. Avoid any Stage 1 software tunes for now as they will likely flag your car at the dealership and jeopardize your powertrain coverage. Stick to the basics for now tho...
> I have about 5000 bucks to spend right now since winter is coming up here in Chicago and I want it to actually handle the slush properly. Just saw this! I remember my first RS winter... honestly you need a 034Motorsport Billet Aluminum Transmission Mount Insert for $100. It tightens shifts instantly and dont hurt your warranty! Amazing!
Re: "> I want it to actually handle the slush properly." - honestly if youre worried about performance in Chicago winters, think about unsprung weight and braking consistency. Stock 22s are basically pothole magnets.
> I want it to actually handle the slush properly. To add to the point above: since you mentioned the Chicago slush, dont ignore the chemical damage. In my experience, salt and road brine are the real killers for these wagons. I've tried many products over the years, and you cant go wrong with a full coating from Ceramic Pro or Gtechniq. It protects your investment without risking the warranty. Much better than worrying about power mods right now.
Regarding what #1 said about Chicago and the warranty, he is spot on. Grip is everything. If you still have cash left after the tires, look at things that make the car feel more alive without getting flagged. To answer your question, an intercooler basically just cools down the air entering the engine so you dont lose power when things get hot.
