What are the absolute must-have performance upgrades or accessories for the Corvette Z06 if Im actually gonna be pushing it on track weekends? Look Ive been driving Vettes for over a decade now and I finally picked up a C8 Z06 a few months back but after taking it out to Willow Springs last weekend I noticed a few things that felt a bit less sharp than I expected after all the hype. The car is a monster obviously but I felt some slight brake fade toward the end of my third session and Im honestly wondering if the stock pads are just not cutting it or if I need to look into a better cooling setup for the rotors.
I've got about $12,000 set aside for this build and I want to get everything dialed in before a big event I've got coming up in early November so time is a bit of a factor here since I know lead times can be a total nightmare lately. I was looking at some of the aero kits because the downforce feels okay but I've heard some guys talking about how the Z07 package spoilers make a huge difference over the standard ones if youre hitting high speeds on the straights and I definitely felt the rear end get a little light on the faster sweepers. Is it worth going aftermarket for the carbon fiber bits or should I try to hunt down OEM parts even though they are priced like they're made of gold?
Also I'm thinking about the tires because the ones it came with are fine for the street but they got greasy real fast once they got hot. Here is what I am looking at:
One weird thing though is that I felt the DCT hunting a bit more than usual in track mode when coming out of the tighter corners and I am wondering if there is a software flash or something I missed? Or maybe I am just overdriving it. Just curious what you guys think is the best bang for your buck on these new platforms...
I absolutely love the Z06 but that Corvette Tax on parts is insane! Skipping OEM carbon saved me thousands last year. I put Pagid Racing RSC1 Brake Pads on mine and the bite is amazing for the price. Definitely toss in some Castrol SRF Racing Brake Fluid because it never boils.
TLDR: Upgrade the pads and fluid immediately, then get a proper track alignment. Aero can wait. I would suggest being careful with the factory brake setup on the Z06 if youre hitting big tracks like Willow Springs. That fade you felt is usually the pads giving out. I definitely recommend swapping to Ferodo Racing DS3.12 Brake Pads and using Castrol SRF React Racing Brake Fluid to handle the heat. It is a way more cost-effective fix than hunting for gold-priced OEM carbon bits. For the rear-end stability, make sure to get a dedicated track alignment before spending 12k on aero. It usually settles the car in those high-speed sweepers. If the tires are getting greasy, you might want to consider Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R Connect for better heat management. Just be careful with software flashes... GM is pretty strict about the DCT warranty.
I’ve been tracking my Z06 for about a year now and honestly I’m beyond satisfied with how it handles once you get the basics sorted. My first time out was a bit eye-opening tho. I noticed the same thing with the rear end feeling a bit floaty at speed. Instead of paying the crazy OEM prices for aero I ended up going with the Vicrez Z07 Style Carbon Fiber Rear Wing and it totally transformed the car’s stability on the fast sweepers. It’s such a relief when you aren’t fighting the wheel at high speeds. For the brakes I switched over to Pagid RSL 29 Yellow Racing Brake Pads and they have been awesome. I've had no complaints with fade at all even after hard 20-minute sessions in the desert heat. Pair those with Motul RBF 660 Factory Line Racing Brake Fluid and you’ll basically never have to worry about a soft pedal again. I used to run cheaper stuff but the 660 holds up way better to the high temps the Z06 generates. Regarding the DCT hunting... I had a similar issue until I realized I was being a bit too indecisive with the throttle mid-corner. The computer gets confused if you’re feathering it too much. Also make sure you check your trans fluid level; sometimes they come from the factory a bit low for aggressive track use. If you want a tire that stays consistent longer than the stock ones, try the Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R Track Tires. They take a lap to warm up but they don't get that greasy feeling nearly as fast as the Pilot Sport 4S. For alignment go see the guys at 714 Tires in Westminster. They’re the best in SoCal for vette setups.
