What are the absolute must-have exterior accessories I should get for my new Chevrolet Silverado because I literally have no idea what I am doing lol. I just picked up a 2024 Silverado last week and man I am so excited to finally be a truck owner after driving a tiny little sedan for ten years but now that I have it in my driveway I realized it looks kind of... bare? Like its missing stuff that makes it look like a real truck if that makes sense.

I was looking online at all these parts websites and my head is just spinning because there are like a thousand different things you can bolt onto these things and I dont want to waste money on stuff that isnt actually useful or good quality. I live out in Ohio so we get a ton of snow and salt on the roads and I'm really worried about the bed getting all scratched up or rusted out so maybe a liner or a cover? I saw something called a tonneau cover but I dont know if the hard ones or the soft ones are better or if I even need one if I'm just hauling stuff from Home Depot once in a while.

Also my wife is already complaining that it is too high for her to get into comfortably so I probably need those bars on the side but I dont even know what the official name for those is. Step bars? Nerf bars? There are so many names it is super confusing. My budget is about $1500 to maybe $2000 for right now and I want to get this stuff sorted before winter hits in a few months. Should I get mud flaps too? I see some trucks with them and some without and I dont know if they actually do anything or if they are just for looks.

Sorry if these are really basic questions I am just a complete newbie to the truck world and I want to make sure I do this right the first time without looking like an idiot at the local shop. What would you guys put on first if you were starting from scratch? I'm mostly using it for DIY projects and maybe some camping trips next summer...

Quick reply while I have a sec. Unfortunately, I've had issues with standard steps—they're not as good as expected once the Ohio salt hits them and they pit fast. Are you planning on doing any heavy towing? If it's just DIY stuff, grab a TruXedo Lo Pro Soft Roll-up Truck Bed Cover. Also, definitely get Husky Liners Rear Wheel Well Guards to keep the gunk from eating your frame.

Just catching up on this thread. Being in Ohio, you really need to prioritize material quality over aesthetics if you want this truck to last ten years like your sedan. Salt is the enemy here.

  • Bed Security: Since you mentioned snow, skip the soft vinyl covers. They stretch and fail under heavy weight. The BAK Industries BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Truck Bed Cover is a solid choice because the aluminum panels can actually support a snow load. It also creates a secure trunk for your tools.
  • Step Accessibility: For the wife's sake, wider is better. Instead of a narrow bar, look at a wider board like the Lund 5-Inch Oval Curved Nerf Bars Stainless Steel. The stainless finish is key for your climate. It wont rust out as fast as powder-coated black steel when the road salt hits it.
  • Paint Protection: Mud flaps are definitely functional. WeatherTech No-Drill Mud Flaps Laser Measured protect your paint from being sandblasted by road debris. This particular model is great because you dont have to drill into the metal, which prevents those early rust spots from forming around mounting holes. Investing in these three things will likely use most of your $2000 budget but it covers the essentials for utility and protection. It's better to buy high-quality parts once than replace cheap ones in three years.

In my experience, Ohio salt destroys trucks fast. You gotta start with these:
