Ive been a Ram guy forever but I just ran into a snag with my new 1500 because it has the multi-function tailgate and none of my old covers seem to fit right. My logic was just to grab another BakFlip but I saw some posts saying the seals are trash with the split tailgate. I really need to get something ordered by tonight because I have a camping trip in the Cascades this weekend and the rain is gonna be brutal. Budget is about $1200 tops. Was looking at the Gator EFX but worried about the drain tubes. What are you guys using that actually stays bone dry?...

To add to the point above: I am gonna play devils advocate here. Everyone always jumps to those expensive hard covers, but honestly, you might want to consider going the high-quality soft route if you are worried about that Cascades rain this weekend. I have been around the block with Rams for a decade, and those rigid panels often struggle with the multi-function tailgates weird tolerances. If you are on a budget and need it fast, something like the TruXedo Lo Pro Soft Roll Up Truck Bed Cover is actually a sleeper hit for the split tailgate. It sits on top of the rails instead of inside them, which creates a much more reliable barrier against heavy downpours because it covers the whole seam. A few things to watch out for with your setup:

  • Check the tensioners twice because the cold mountain air will make the vinyl shrink.
  • Make sure the header seal is seated perfectly against the cab wall.
  • Dont over-tighten the clamps or you will warp the rail alignment on that split gate. Personally, I would skip the Gator EFX Hard Folding Truck Bed Cover if you are worried about drains. Those tubes are a nightmare to keep clear when you are out in the woods with pine needles and gunk. Ngl, I would rather have a $500 cover that actually works than a $1200 one that leaks at every hinge point. Just my two cents, but save that extra cash for some decent dry bags and better beer for the trip. Be careful with those mountain roads tho, the rain up there is no joke.

Late to the party but i just went through this with my 2022. I ended up grabbing the UnderCover ArmorFlex Hard Folding Truck Bed Cover and it has been solid. It sits right around your budget and handles that split tailgate way better than the old Bakflips ever did.

  • The Line-X coating is basically bulletproof for camping and tossing gear on top.
  • Seals are beefy enough that i dont get more than a few drops in the corners during heavy rain.
  • You dont have to mess with those annoying drain tubes as much because of how the rails are channeled. One thing tho, make sure you align the side rails slightly toward the cab before tightening everything down. It helps the tailgate seal sit flush against the back edge. Been using it for a year now and honestly no complaints... definitely worth a look if you need it shipped fast.

To add to the point above: I have spent way too much time looking at the seal tolerances for the Ram multifunction tailgate and honestly, most of the big brands have really let us down here. Its disappointing that a $1000 plus cover still requires extra weatherstripping to be actually waterproof. I had high hopes for the Gator EFX Hard Fold Truck Bed Cover but the drain tube diameter is way too small for heavy PNW downpours, so you end up with overflow in the rails. Personally, I would steer you toward the TruXedo Sentry CT Hard Rolling Truck Bed Cover. It uses a matte woven fabric bonded to aluminum slats which basically solves the hinge-leak problem that plagues folding covers. Since its a rolling design, it maintains constant pressure along the side rails which is critical for that split tailgate. I checked the specs on the mounting brackets and they sit slightly higher, which gives the tailgate seals better clearance to close without binding. Unfortunately, you might still see a few drips at the very corners because of how Ram designed those plastic caps, but this is about as close to a sealed vault as you can get for under twelve hundred. Just make sure the rails are perfectly level during the install or the tension will be wonky... ask me how I know.

You really have to be careful with that multi-function tailgate because the center split is a major leak point. I would suggest being extra methodical about checking the rail clearance.

  • make sure the side seals overlap the tailgate corners
  • check if the drain tubes reach the factory bed holes without kinking I wouldnt rush into it without verifying the fitment or you might end up with a soaked bed...

Found this thread a bit late but honestly the big names have been letting me down lately. I tried a few and the fitment on the 1500 multi-function gate is just... ugh.

  • If you want something that actually seals, look at the Extang Trifecta ALX Soft Folding Truck Bed Cover. It uses a rotatable latch instead of those flimsy pull cables.
  • Most people go for the Rough Country Hard Tri-Fold Bed Cover because its cheap, but the weather stripping is way too thin for the split in our tailgates. The reason the Extang works better is the frame sits slightly higher, letting the seal compress naturally against the gate instead of getting pinched in the split. Speaking of the Cascades, watch out for the washouts near Mt. Baker if youre headed that way. Last time I went up there, my old truck got stuck behind a fallen cedar for six hours. Had to use my winch for the first time in years and ended up covered in mud. My wife was fuming because we missed our dinner reservation in Bellingham. Anyway, hopefully you get it sorted before the rain hits.
