I just picked up my 2024 Canyon AT4X and Im honestly kind of losing my mind trying to figure out what to bolt on first. I have a trip planned to Moab in like three weeks so I dont have much time to decide and I have about 3k saved up specifically for this. The truck is already beastly but I dont want to be the guy who gets stuck or bashes a rocker panel on day one.

So I was thinking about starting with a winch because the front bumper is ready for it but then I look at the prices for a Warn Zeon and it eats like half my budget instantly. My logic was that a winch is the ultimate insurance policy but then I started looking at the 589 Fabrication hidden winch mount vs just getting some high-end rock sliders first. The stock ones are okay I guess? But they dont seem as beefy as the aftermarket ones from Victory 4x4. Im terrified of hitting a ledge and crumpling a door because the factory steps didnt hold up.

Then there is the whole bed storage situation. Im torn between the Leitner Designs rack and a simple Decked system. If I go Leitner I can carry more recovery boards and fuel but it adds so much height and wind drag on the highway drive out there. If I go Decked I lose the bed depth but keep things dry. I keep going back and forth because I want to be prepared but I also dont want to make the truck too heavy and ruin the Multimatic shocks performance since that is why I bought this trim in the first place. My wife thinks I'm overthinking it but I just dont want to break a 55k truck.

Is it better to spend the 3k on pure recovery like a winch and some MaxTrax or should I put that money into better underside protection even though the AT4X has the factory skids already? Im worried the factory ones are just thin stamped steel and wont hold up to the rocks out west. My head is spinning trying to prioritize this stuff before the deadline... what would you guys actually prioritize for a first desert trip?

Quick follow up since I went through this exact panic last summer before heading out to the White Rim Trail. Honestly, your wife is right that youre overthinking it a bit, but thats honestly half the fun of owning a truck like this. I ended up being very satisfied with the WARN VR EVO 10-S Winch with Synthetic Rope instead of the more expensive Zeon line. It saved me a ton of money and still fits perfectly in that factory winch-ready bumper. It works well and has never let me down during a pull, ngl. One thing I noticed on my trip is that those Multimatic shocks hang pretty low in the rear. I was much happier after I bolted on some CBI Offroad Rear Shock Skids to keep those expensive dampers from getting chewed up by loose rocks. Its a small investment that gives way more peace of mind than a fancy rack. For storage, I went with the DECKED Drawer System for GMC Canyon because it keeps the center of gravity low. A tall rack catches so much wind on those long highway stretches to Utah, and I really liked keeping my MAXTRAX MKII Recovery Boards and tools locked away from sticky fingers while I was away from the vehicle. If youre worried about weight ruining the ride, maybe skip the heavy bed racks for now. The truck handles better when it isnt top-heavy. I also picked up a Factor 55 UltraHook Winch Hook with Integrated Shackle Mount which makes recovery setups way faster and feels a lot safer than a standard hook. Youll have a blast out there, just watch your lines on the ledges... those shocks are amazing but they arent magic.

Moab is notorious for eating rocker panels. I would suggest looking at Victory 4x4 Rock Sliders because the factory rails are thin. Make sure to keep the weight down so you dont overwork the Multimatics. You should also consider some underbody protection from 589 Fabrication Skid Plates. Preventing damage is definitely the priority for a first trip out west.
