I just picked up my EV9 and love the space, but I need a solid roof rack for our family ski trips. I’m worried about how crossbars might affect the highway range and wind noise. Should I stick with the official Kia parts, or are Thule/Yakima options better for the flush rails? Any specific models you'd recommend?
Curious about one thing: are you planning on leaving the bars on all year or just for the winter?? That actually changes my recommendation cuz of the drag coefficient.
I've tried many setups over the years and i think you should check these two out:
1. Thule WingBar Edge for Kia EV9 flush rails - These are basically the gold standard. They're super quiet and pretty much the best for range, but they're pricey and have less usable bar space.
2. Yakima JetStream Crossbars with SightLine Towers - I mean, these are reallyyy solid too. Highkey better if you're hauling multiple pairs of skis and a box since they're T-track compatible and have a bit more overhang.
In my experience, the official Kia ones are okay but they're usually just rebranded Thule WingBar Evo bars anyway... so you might as well go with the name brand for better support and accessories. Thoughts??
Hmm, I've had a different experience over the years. Honestly, you don't NEED to drop $600+ on Thule to get a great setup! Respectfully, I'd consider the Kia OEM bars or a high-quality value brand instead.
* Kia EV9 Genuine Cross Bars: Usually around $350-$400. They're designed specifically for the EV9 aerodynamics!
* Turtle Air V1 Cross Bars for Kia EV9: Super quiet and literally half the price of Thule.
I mean, if you're only hitting the slopes a few times, saving $300 is AMAZING. Plus, range loss is basically unavoidable once you throw a box on top anyway, so why overpay? good luck!
Ok so, unfortunately, you gotta be careful with cheap aftermarket bars on those flush rails. I had issues with a generic set that definately whistled like crazy and dropped my highway range by almost 15%... seriously.
- Avoid unbranded "universal" kits
- Stick with Thule for better aerodynamics
I mean, the Kia OEM ones are fine, but highkey, Thule is just safer for heavy ski gear. gl!
Late to the party but I've spent way too much time testing racks on EVs. If you want something that isnt gonna fail when you're halfway to the mountain in a blizzard, you gotta look at Yakima or Rhino-Rack.
