Hey everyone! I’ve been absolutely loving my MX-5, but one thing that’s really starting to bug me is how incredibly dim the cabin is at night. The factory halogen bulbs feel pretty outdated and barely put out enough light to find my phone if I drop it in the center console or footwell. I’m looking to brighten things up and give the interior a more modern, premium feel.

I’ve been browsing a few LED conversion kits for the dome and trunk lights, but I’m worried about getting something that’s either too blue or so bright it’s blinding when I unlock the car. I’m also really interested in adding some subtle footwell lighting that ties into the existing dimming circuit, but I’m not sure if I should go with a dedicated kit like the ones from Diode Dynamics or try a more generic DIY route.

Has anyone here upgraded their setup recently? I’m specifically looking for something that is mostly plug-and-play since I’m not the most confident with complex wiring. I’d prefer a clean, cool white look rather than crazy RGB colors. What are the best interior lighting upgrades you’ve found that actually improve visibility without ruining the car's aesthetic? I'd love to hear what worked for your build!

Similar situation here. honestly, i spent weeks obsessing over the circuit draw because i didn't want to fry the BCM or cause a flicker on the dimming circuit... basically, i'm super paranoid about wiring safety! i ended up going with the VLEDS Footwell Lighting Kit 5000K White because it's fused and high-quality. it felt way safer than a generic diy hack, and the 5000k temp looks SO premium without being blindingly blue.

Quick question - which generation Miata are you rocking? I've done this on both an NC and my current ND, and the wiring for footwells is a bit different between them!

Before I dive into the tech specs, honestly just check out The Retrofit Source Morimoto XB LED T10 Bulbs for your dome light. They're way cleaner than cheap Amazon stuff.

* Go with 5000K for that pure white look
* Avoid the "cool white" 6000K+ unless you want it looking blue

Let me know the year and I'll help you find the right dimming wire!

I’ve been an owner for a while now and honestly, I had the exact same hesitation when I first started looking at upgrades. Before I suggest anything specific, are you planning on doing the install yourself or having a shop handle the footwell part? Also, is your car still under warranty? I was pretty nervous about my current setup because I'm not a pro with electronics at all. Here’s basically what I’ve noticed after having my LEDs for a couple of years:
* The visibility for finding stuff like keys or a phone is a million times better.
* I was super worried about the "blinding" effect you mentioned, but you get used to it pretty fast.
* The biggest thing for me was making sure everything felt secure so I didn't have a short circuit while driving. I went the ultra-cautious route and only used stuff that snapped right into the factory clips. It’s held up well, but I’m still always a bit careful whenever I have to pop a panel off! Tbh, once you get that extra light in there, you'll wonder how you ever lived with the old yellow bulbs.

This^ Also wanted to add that you dont necessarily have to break the bank to get that premium feel. I remember when I first swapped mine out, I was terrified of it looking like a cheap spaceship lol. I went through a couple sets before I found the sweet spot for my current setup. Honestly, the biggest game changer for me was sticking to a 5000K "pure white" temp... anything higher usually looks blue and kinda cheap imo.

I basically did a DIY footwell job using some basic LED strips and tapped them into the existing dimming circuit. It took me maybe 30 minutes?? And seriously, having that subtle glow down by the pedals makes the cabin feel twice as big at night. Its sooo much more functional when you drop your keys or phone. I was super happy with how it turned out because it looks totally OEM and fades out perfectly when you shut the door. Plus, if youre budget-conscious, you can get the whole cabin looking sharp for way less than those pre-packaged kits if you just buy the bulbs individually. Its definitely the best bang-for-your-buck mod you can do for the interior!!

Oh man, I totally get it!! I honestly felt the exact same way when I first got my Miata... it's literally like a cave in there at night lol. For your situation, I would suggest just sticking with a brand that specializes in car LEDs like Diode Dynamics. I'm still a bit of a beginner when it comes to modding, so I was really nervous about messing up the wiring, but their stuff is basically just plug-and-play and it feels soooo much safer than trying to splice things urself!

I went with a cool white LED kit for my dome and trunk and wow, what a difference!! It actually makes the car feel modern and premium like you mentioned, not like a cheap spaceship or anything. I was super worried about it being blindingly bright too, but honestly? It's just right. For the footwells, I definitely recommend going with a dedicated kit from a reputable lighting brand instead of doing a DIY generic route. It ties right into the dimming circuit perfectly so it doesn't ruin the aesthetic at all!

I'm still kinda cautious about changing too much electrical stuff on my own, so I actually asked a buddy who's more of a pro to watch me while I did it, but it was so easy I probably could've done it solo. Seriously, just get any interior kit from a big name like Diode Dynamics and you can't go wrong! It makes finding stuff in the center console AMAZING. Good luck with the build, you're gonna love it! 👍

so basically i spent hours researching specs cuz most cheap stuff is literal trash. unfortunately, generic brands from amazon flickered on me... super annoying. ur gonna want a decent Kelvin rating for that "cool white" look.

- Philips X-tremeVision LED T10 6000K: Great heat specs and beam pattern, but a bit pricey.
- Sylvania ZEVO LED White T10 6000K: Not as bright as i hoped tbh, but has a solid lifetime warranty.

Both are simple plug-and-play basically.
