Gearing up my XC90 Recharge for a Rockies trip but I am so annoyed. My logic was a hitch rack to save EV range, but I read it messes with the trunk sensor. I saw:

  • official volvo boxes
  • cheap amazon bars

but people say they whistle? Budget is $800 so what actually works...

Building on the earlier suggestion, honestly ive found that if you really want to avoid that annoying whistling while climbing through the mountains, you gotta look at the Rhino-Rack Vortex StealthBar Black. These have been on three different SUVs of mine over the years and they are basically silent since they dont have that huge overhang like the universal ones. In my experience, safety is everything when you're heading to the Rockies. People overlook how much gear shifts on steep grades... grabbing a Thule Load Net 80x80cm is a smart move to keep everything locked down. Honestly, cheap bars are a nightmare waiting to happen. I once saw a budget box fly off a car near Denver because the clamps failed. Not worth the risk to save a few bucks. Stick to the brands that actually crash-test their gear. Ngl, the $800 budget is tight for a full setup, but getting the base bars right is the priority.

Might wanna be careful with cheap bars, safety is huge. I would suggest Yakima JetStream Aerodynamic Crossbars 50in so you dont have issues.

  • use a torque wrench
  • check weight limits Better safe than sorry!

> my logic was a hitch rack to save EV range, but I read it messes with the trunk sensor Just saw this thread and honestly you're spot on about that kick sensor being a pain. I tried the Thule T2 Pro XTR 2-bike Hitch Rack on my Recharge last year and it drove me nuts how the sensor would just give up when I had my hands full. You really have to be careful with hitch placement. I eventually swapped to a roof setup because of it. I would suggest looking at the Thule Motion XT L Roof Box instead. I once used cheap bars from a random site and the whistling was unbearable on a 6-hour drive... literally felt like my head was gonna explode. Make sure to get the Volvo Load Carriers Wing Profile bars specifically. They fit the flush rails perfectly and minimize that drag that kills your battery. Might want to consider checking Marketplace for used boxes to stay under that $800 limit tho because new ones are pricey.

Quick reply while I have a sec. If youre heading to the Rockies, reliability is the only thing that matters. I have been very satisfied with a heavy duty steel safety grille and custom fit floor trays. It keeps the cabin organized and really protects the interior from mountain snow and mud. You should be cautious about a few things:

  • Overloading the roof can seriously impact the handling of the Recharge because of the battery weight and center of gravity.
  • Obstruction of the rear radar sensors or the camera lens can compromise your active safety systems.
  • Improperly secured internal loads that might shift and become projectiles during steep mountain descents. I have no complaints as long as every piece of gear is strictly rated for the vehicles weight capacity. Honestly, following the load limits is way more important than the trunk sensor being finicky. Safety is the priority when youre dealing with those mountain passes.
