What should I check when buying a used Audi Q5?

Ive been driving an old A4 for like eight years now so Im pretty used to the standard VAG maintenance stuff like timing belts and the occasional oil leak but Im finally looking to upgrade to a used Q5. Ive got about 28k saved up and Im looking at the 2018 or 2019 models specifically because I want the newer interior and better tech. I went to look at one yesterday near Seattle and it seemed okay but I noticed this weird hesitation when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd which I havent really felt in the older ZF transmissions.

It kind of threw me off because I thought these newer S-tronics were supposed to be buttery smooth. Is that just a quirk of the DSG or should I be worried about the mechatronics unit going out early? Im also seeing some stuff online about the panoramic sunroofs leaking and rattling like crazy which would be a nightmare with all the rain we get up here. Beside the usual water pump and thermostat housing issues that every 2.0T seems to have what are the specific red flags for this generation? I really dont want to get stuck with a money pit right before ski season starts. What are the specific things I should be looking for during a PPI or even just a quick test drive?

The 2018-2019 Q5 is a fantastic choice for a Seattle winter! The B9 platform is absolutely amazing compared to the older A4s and the tech is a huge leap forward. That 3-2 downshift hesitation you felt is actually pretty common on the DL382 S-tronic, but it can often be recalibrated with a basic setting reset. Focus on these two critical points during your inspection:

  • Sunroof Drains: Pour water down the front channels and check for wet carpets under the floor mats. Its a critical fail point in rainy climates.
  • Transmission Service: Verify the 40k-mile fluid change was done on time. If that service was skipped, the mechatronics might be toast. I highly recommend grabbing an OBDeleven NextGen Diagnostic Tool for VAG to scan for hidden soft codes that wont trigger a dash light. It's a total lifesaver for checking the car's health before you buy!

Coming back to this, I've spent a lot of time looking at the technical data for the B9 platform and honestly its a huge step up from the older stuff. I'm really happy with how the EA888 Gen 3 performs compared to the older versions.

  • The engine is a refined masterpiece now that they fixed the piston ring issues from the earlier years, no complaints there.
  • You should definitely peek at the motor mounts during the PPI because they are hydraulic and leak this weird purple fluid when the rubber cracks.
  • The Quattro with Ultra system works well and is super efficient for those long drives up to the mountains. I actually took a similar Q5 up to Crystal Mountain last February when we had that massive dump of powder. The car handled the slush perfectly but the best part was this little diner we found on the way back in Enumclaw. I ended up talking to the waitress for like an hour because she used to own a vintage 944 and we got into this huge debate about transaxle layouts and why the weight distribution is so superior for handling. I totally lost track of time and my buddies were already halfway home with the ski gear before I even paid the bill. It is funny how a car conversation can just take over your whole afternoon like that. She had some cool stories about driving it down to Oregon. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.
