My Q5 just died in Seattle traffic and I need it back by Monday for my commute. I saw videos about a $100 special locking ring tool but some guy said a screwdriver and hammer works fine. I'm scared of cracking the tank seal though. What is actually the best way to do this fast without the tool?

Also, you really dont need to drop a hundred bucks on that specialized Audi tool to get the job done. I remember being super stressed about my Q5 back in the day, thinking I was gonna crack the tank or ruin the seal. Honestly, I'm happy I didn't go the screwdriver route tho... those plastic rings are way too brittle for impact force and slip easily. I ended up using the Performance Tool W83001 Adjustable Fuel Pump Tank Wrench which only cost me about $20. It works well because it adjusts to fit the exact diameter of the ring and allows you to apply constant, even torque with a standard breaker bar. When I used it, the ring popped off without any drama or that scary cracking noise. No complaints about the tool at all for a budget option. Some technical tips since you're in a rush:

  • Clean the top of the tank with compressed air before opening so dirt doesnt fall in
  • Use a 1/2 inch drive for better leverage
  • Lube the new gasket with a tiny bit of fuel so it seats right It basically turned a stressful job into a 20-minute swap. Way better than risking a $400 tank replacement if a screwdriver slips and punctures something. Saved me tons of money and honestly felt way more secure than the hammer method.

You might want to consider a Mayhew Pro 61350 3/4-Inch Brass Drift to distribute force. Be careful tho, those plastic rings are prone to cracking if you dont apply even pressure.
