Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger on a new BMW M3 Competition and I am absolutely blown away by the power delivery right out of the box. However, coming from a slightly older, more raw platform, the G80 feels a bit too quiet and 'refined' for my liking. I’m looking to unlock a bit more of that S58 character without ruining the daily drivability.
I’ve been doing some research, and I'm currently torn between a few options. First, I’m definitely looking at a single mid-pipe to help the exhaust note, but I’m worried about adding too much rasp. I’m also considering a set of lowering springs—maybe MSS or H&R—to get rid of that front wheel gap, but I don't want to compromise the adaptive suspension feel. Lastly, I’ve been eyeing some carbon fiber aero bits, but I’m unsure if the fitment on aftermarket kits is actually comparable to the M Performance parts.
I want to keep things relatively tasteful and warranty-friendly for now. For those of you who have lived with this car for a while, what are the absolute 'must-have' performance accessories or mods you’d recommend starting with to really sharpen the experience?
basically, I've spent way too much time obsessing over the S58's technical quirks lol. Honestly, I'm a bit more conservative with my setup because I'm terrified of voiding that powertrain warranty, right?
Before you drop thousands on carbon, you gotta understand the 'Secondary Cat' situation. Most people jump to mid-pipes, but if you're budget-conscious and want to keep it tasteful, I'd suggest starting with a Burger Motorsports G80 M3 JB4 Tuner or just a simple valve controller. But for the exhaust, have you looked at the MAD BMW G80 M3 Single Midpipe? It's way cheaper than some others and literally gives you that deep S58 growl without the nasty rasp you get from dual setups.
On the suspension side, since you're worried about the adaptive dampers (smart move!!), maybe check out the AST Suspension G80 M3 Lowering Springs. They're usually around $300-$350, which is a steal compared to the $1k+ height adjustable kits. I've had them for 5k miles and the ride quality is basically stock but looks sooo much better.
Just be careful with aftermarket carbon fitment... if it isn't dry carbon, it might yellow in a year. Stick to reputable budget stuff like Unit17 G80 M3 Carbon Fiber Front Lip if you want to save cash over the OEM M-Perf parts. gl man!
In my experience, you've basically nailed the holy trinity of G80 mods right there! I've been living with my M3 Comp for over a year and honestly, the stock setup is way too quiet for such a beastly engine.
Here's what I recommend to sharpen things up without ruining the daily vibe:
• For the exhaust, definitely go with the Active Autowerke G80 M3 Single Mid-pipe. I tried a few setups and the single pipe is the only way to get that deep, throaty growl without the nasty rasp you get from X-pipes. It literally transforms the S58 character. Plus, it's usually a bolt-on so ur warranty should be fine for the most part.
• On the suspension side, I went with the MSS Adjustable Ride Height Spring Kit. I was worried about the adaptive dampers too, but these actually keep the factory ride quality really well while killing that massive front wheel gap. H&R is okay, but they can feel a bit bouncy on the G80 platform compared to the MSS setup imo.
• For aero, if ur worried about fitment, don't sleep on MHC Plus BMW M3 G80 Carbon Fiber Front Lip. The fitment is basically 99% of the OEM BMW M Performance Carbon Fiber Front Attachment, but you aren't paying the insane 'BMW tax' for it.
One thing I'd add? Get a Dahler Exhaust Flap Control Module. It lets u open the valves 100% all the time, which really helps with that 'refined' feeling you mentioned lol. Good luck with the build, the G80 is seriously a masterpiece once u unlock it!
Late to the party but I had to jump in because I've seen way too many guys go overboard early on and regret it when things start rattling or the dealer gets cranky. Back when I had my F80, I modded it till it was basically undriveable as a daily... learned my lesson the hard way. With the G80, I've stayed much more conservative. Reliability is king for me. Honestly, if you're worried about longevity, one of the first things I did was swap the flimsy plastic underbody protection. The oil cooler is super exposed on these cars and one stray rock on the highway can ruin your whole week. I went with the Mishimoto BMW G80 M3 Skid Plate for peace of mind. Its basically insurance for your engine. Quick tip: Before you go crazy with power, look into better cooling. The S58 runs hot if you're pushing it. I'd definitely look at the CSF High-Performance Front Mount Transmission Oil Cooler if you plan on keeping the car long-term. It's way more worth it than a few extra decibels in my book.
Honestly, coming from older platforms, I totally get where you're coming from. The G80 is a beast but it's definitely a bit too "civilized" from the factory. If you're looking at this from a budget-conscious perspective, I would suggest looking into a valve controller from a brand like Dahler or SST. It's basically the best bang-for-your-buck mod because it lets you keep the valves 100% open, which makes a massive difference in volume without the cost of a full exhaust system.
Regarding the suspension, if you wanna save some cash and keep that adaptive feel, just grab any set of lowering springs from H&R. You honestly can't go wrong with them for a daily driver; they close that gap perfectly and the ride quality stays pretty close to OEM. Plus, they're way cheaper than the full height-adjustable kits if you don't plan on constantly tweaking your height for the track.
For the carbon bits, ngl, the M Performance stuff is overpriced. I've had great luck with kits from MHC or Northwest Carbon. The fitment is like 95% there for literally half the price. Just make sure you get a good shop to install 'em so the gaps look right. It's all about getting that aggressive look without the "BMW Tax," you know? Anyway, how much are you looking to drop on the first round of mods? That usually dictates where you should start! 👍
