Finally got my 296 GTB in the garage here in Miami and Im kinda paranoid about the battery dying already. I read online that the official Ferrari tender is just a rebranded CTEK but then I saw a post saying the 296 needs a special lithium-specific one or it wont charge right through the magnetic port. I dont want to mess up the electronics. Also looking for a cover that wont ruin my matte paint finish since it's a shared garage.

  • Budget: $700ish
  • Must be lithium safe
  • Cover: super soft indoor only
  • Needs: shipping to Florida ASAP

What are you guys actually using?

@Reply #1 - good point! honestly, you dont need to blow that whole $700 budget just to keep the battery from bricking. I have been using the NOCO GENIUS10 10A Lithium Smart Charger for a while now on my lithium setups and it works great. It handles the LiFePO4 chemistry perfectly and is way cheaper than the CTEK stuff. For that matte paint, you gotta be super careful about micro-scratches in a shared garage. In my experience, the Covercraft Form-Fit Custom Car Cover is the way to go. The inner lining is basically like a soft sweatshirt, so it wont buff your paint shiny by accident.

  • Just buy a magnetic adapter lead for the NOCO online
  • Make sure the car is spotless before putting the cover on
  • Shipping to FL is usually quick from most vendors Saved you a few hundred bucks right there... use it for gas instead.

I actually have a different take on the charger situation. While the NOCO or standard CTEK work fine, they dont natively fit the 296 magnetic port without a lot of fumbling. If you're spending this much on a car, you probably dont want to be popping the hood or trunk every time you park just to hook up cables. I recommend looking at a slightly more tech-heavy setup that still fits your budget:

  • Victron Energy Blue Smart IP65 12/5 12V 5A Lithium Charger
  • This is my go-to because it has Bluetooth. You can literally check your 296's battery voltage and charging stage from your phone while you're in your apartment. It's super reliable and handles the LiFePO4 logic perfectly.
  • California Car Cover Plushweave Custom Fit Indoor Car Cover
  • Since you mentioned a shared garage and matte paint, I'd skip the thin satin options. This one has a very thick 100% cotton flannel lining. It is way better for shared garage life because if someone brushes against the car, the extra padding actually provides a buffer. Basically, you will need to buy a magnetic adapter pigtail separately to make any non-Ferrari charger work with that rear port. The Victron is built like a tank compared to the plastic chargers, which is nice if the Miami garage gets humid or hot. Tbh it is just a more robust way to go for a car this sensitive.

Congrats on the 296. Over the years, I've tried many setups for my Ferraris, and skipping the dealer-branded tender is the smartest move. The official one is just a rebranded CTEK Lithium US 12V 4.3A Battery Charger with a massive markup. You definitely need the lithium-specific model because the 296 uses a Li-ion battery with different charging stages than lead-acid cells. If you use the wrong one, the battery management system might even shut down the port. Just buy a magnetic adapter separately to make it work with your car. For that matte paint, dust is your enemy in a shared garage. The Coverking Satin Stretch Custom Indoor Car Cover is the best choice. It has a super soft inner fleece that wont scratch the finish. Just make sure the car is spotless before covering or youll trap dirt against the paint. TL;DR: Grab the CTEK Lithium US 12V 4.3A Battery Charger and the Coverking Satin Stretch Custom Indoor Car Cover.
