So I just got a 2023 Santa Fe and need some bars before our trip to Oregon in three weeks. Im torn between the Thule WingBar Evo and the Yakima JetStream set. The Thule looks super sleek but man the price is steep, almost $700 with all the fit kits. I found some generic ones on Amazon for like $150 but I'm scared theyll whistle or fly off on the highway. We gotta fit a large cargo box and a mountain bike up there so it needs to be sturdy. Is the Thule worth the extra cash for the noise reduction or does the Yakima do basically the same thing for less? My budget is ideally under $500-600 total. Which one should I go with?

Safety first!! I totally get being nervous about those cheap Amazon bars... seriously dont risk it with a heavy cargo box! I checked the fit guides on etrailer and RackAttack to compare technical specs. Here are two awesome picks:

Big brands have high markups. BrightLines Crossbars for 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe are a decent option that works for way less.

  • check bolt tension after driving
  • grease the threads

Coming back to this, you really gotta be careful with those weight ratings on the Santa Fe roof. I always lean towards being overly cautious because having gear shift at high speeds is a nightmare. I remember driving up toward the Oregon border years ago and being so paranoid about my setup that I stopped every fifty miles just to torque the bolts. Well, on one of those stops I found this incredible little antique shop in a town I cant even remember the name of now. I ended up buying this massive cast iron weather vane that weighed a ton. I spent the rest of the trip worrying if the extra weight in the trunk was gonna mess with my suspension. I actually spent more time looking at vintage clocks in that shop than actually driving to the coast. Anyway sorry I totally went off on a tangent there. TL;DR: Safety and bolt tightness is everything when hauling gear, dont skimp on reliability.

I spent ages comparing drag coefficients before buying the Yakima JetStream Black 50 Inch Crossbars for my Santa Fe. Honestly, I'm so satisfied with the 165lb dynamic load rating. They handle my cargo box and bike with zero flex at 75mph. Quick tip: make sure the rubber infill strips are cut perfectly to length. Even a tiny gap causes that annoying whistle.

Just catching up on this thread and honestly... I feel your pain on the costs. It's actually insane how much Thule and Yakima charge once you add up the towers, bars, and those specific fit kits. It feels like total highway robbery just to carry your own gear. It makes me so mad that the base prices look okay but then you're at $700 before you even buy the bike mount. Like, its just metal bars, right? Such a headache. @Reply #1 - good point! Load ratings are everything when you're mixing boxes and bikes. If you want to stay under that $500 mark without buying the cheap Amazon junk, check out the Malone AirFlow2 50 Inch Aluminum Crossbars. They're basically the workhorse of the mid-range market. Quick tip: Double-check your sunroof clearance before you fully tighten everything. Sometimes the clamps sit lower than you'd expect and can block the glass.
