I'm finally taking delivery of my Kia EV9 next week and need to get a Level 2 charger installed ASAP! With that massive battery, I’m looking for something reliable that can handle 48 amps for the fastest home speeds. Should I go hardwired or stick with a NEMA 14-50 plug? What brands are you all using?
Hello, you can take a look at these top recommended Charging stations here: https://www.autoaccessorypicks.com/best-ev-charging-for-kia-ev9/
In my experience, ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 EV Charger is more reliable than Wallbox Pulsar Plus 48A EV Charger. Hardwire for 48A cuz plugs are slower... learned that lesson!! honestly SO happy. gl
Seconding the recommendation above. Hardwiring is literally the only way to go if you want that full 48A speed for the EV9. Basically, per the electrical code, you can only pull 80% of a circuits capacity for continuous loads like an EV. So, a NEMA 14-50 plug on a 50A breaker is highkey capped at 40A (9.6 kW). To hit the 48A (11.5 kW) your Kia can handle, you gotta have a 60A breaker and a hardwired connection. It makes a HUGE diff when youre trying to top off that massive 99.8 kWh battery overnight... especially if you get home late with like 10% left lol. I actually went through this struggle recently. I think? i was looking at the ChargePoint mentioned earlier, but I ended up going with the Tesla Universal Wall Connector because it has the built-in Magic Dock for J1772. It's super future-proof since almost everything is moving to NACS soon anyway. Another solid technical choice is the Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp. I love it cuz it integrates with their home energy monitor if youre into data like I am. Plus, its usually way cheaper than the big name brands. Just make sure your electrician uses heavy gauge wire—like 6 gauge—otherwise you might deal with some thermal issues or just wasted energy as heat... not ideal. Its kinda a pain to set up initially, but honestly, once its done, you wont have to think about it again. Congrats on the EV9 tho, those things are literally tanks... in a good way!! gl with the install.
Hmm, I've had a different experience. Option A (Hardwired 48A) is fastest, but Option B (40A Plug-in) is way cheaper for installation. Option C is a high-value unit like Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 EV Charger. Honestly, 40A is plenty for the EV9 overnight. I'm sooo happy with my Autel MaxiCharger AC Wallbox Home 50A—it’s literally half the price of the big brands and works great tho!
Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!
unfortuantely, i had a pretty rough time with my first home setup. i thought going the plug route would be fine but the thermal issues were just constant. honestly, it was pretty disappointing to see the charging speeds throttle down because the outlet was getting way too hot... actually found some slight scorching on the casing which is terrifying. basically had to rip it all out. for a battery as big as the ev9, you really need that hardwired connection on a 60a breaker. the reliability is just night and day when you dont have those extra mechanical points of failure. i can help you figure out the wiring specs if you're doing the run yourself! tl;dr: hardwire is the only way for safety and speed. my previous plug-in setup was a disaster and couldnt handle the long sessions.
