Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a WRX a few months ago, and honestly, I couldn't be happier with how it drives. That AWD grip and the turbo kick never get old. However, every time I park it and walk away, I feel like it’s looking a bit too "factory" for my taste. Don't get me wrong, the hood scoop is legendary, but compared to some of the builds I see at local meets, mine just feels a little plain.
I really want to give it a more aggressive, "mean" look without going overboard or making it look tacky. I’ve been browsing through sites like Subispeed and Import Image Racing, but the sheer amount of options is a bit overwhelming. I’m looking for those "must-have" aesthetic mods that really change the profile of the car and give it some personality.
Specifically, I've been eyeing some front lips—maybe something in a matte black or carbon fiber to match the trim—and I’m definitely interested in a rear diffuser to beef up the back end. I’ve also seen a lot of people installing those F1-style fourth brake lights; do those actually look as good in person as they do in photos? Also, I’m curious about smaller touches like emblem overlays or window deflectors. I want to keep the build relatively clean and cohesive, so I'm trying to avoid just throwing random parts at it that don't flow together.
My budget is somewhat flexible, but I'd prefer to start with things that offer the most visual bang for my buck. I’m not quite ready for a full widebody kit or a custom wrap just yet, so I'm focusing on those essential bolt-on accessories that really make the WRX pop.
So, for those of you who have been modding your Subies for a while, what are your top recommendations for aesthetic upgrades? If you could only pick three things to change the look of a stock WRX, what would they be?
yo congrats on the new ride!! honestly that factory look is a mood, i totally get it. i remember when i first got mine, i felt like i was driving a regular sedan instead of a WRX... but yeah, modding these cars is SO fun if u do it right.
If i had to pick three things to really change the profile, i’d definitely start with a front lip. i use the Subispeed V1 Front Lip in Matte Black and it makes the front end look way more mean. but realy, be cautious with driveways because even stock height cars can scrape if youre not careful!! i’ve already dinged mine once and it’s heartbreaking.
Second thing: you gotta get that F1 light. i went with the Subispeed F1 Style Rear Fog Light V2 and it’s probably my favorite mod. it actually looks insane at night. plus, it lowkey makes the car safer since people can actually see u in the rain. i'd highkey recommend getting the Subispeed PnP Harness for Rear Fog Light too. dont mess with splicing wires if u dont have to, it’s basically just not worth the risk of a short circuit imo.
Lastly, get some Subaru OEM Window Deflectors. they fit way better than the knockoff ones and they add that nice 'chunkiness' to the side profile. plus you can crack ur windows when it rains without getting soaked. ngl, i think the matte black look is cleaner than carbon fiber for a daily, unless you wanna spend big bucks on the real stuff... carbon fiber wraps usually look kinda tacky after a year in the sun.
basically, just take it slow. start with the lip and the light and see how u feel!! gl
Curious about one thing: whats ur total budget?? basically Bayson R CS Style Front Lip is cheap but sags, while Maxton Design V1 Front Splitter is sturdier. watch for scrapes!!
sooo i've been around the subie scene for a decade and its easy to overdo it. before you bolt on a lip, warning: stay away from cheap abs plastic, it'll shatter on your first driveway scrape. go with polyurethane instead. i'd suggest high-quality mud flaps for that wide rally stance and a mesh grille swap... it totally changes the front profile. those f1 lights look sick but check your local laws first!
Honestly, if your looking at the market right now, you really have to weigh the "brand tax" vs. real-world durability. Tbh, the price jumps are wild for basically the same mold when you start looking at carbon fiber vs. poly. Here are a couple of brands I’d look at for a cleaner profile:
* APR Performance Carbon Fiber Front Air Dam - If you have the budget, the fitment is *way* better than the cheap reps, but it is brittle if you scrape.
* Noble Performance RD-Style Rear Diffuser - This is a solid mid-tier option that bridges the gap between the super cheap plastic ones and the high-end track stuff. Its basically a trade-off... carbon looks premium but polyurethane is what I’d go with if the car is a daily driver and you're worried about speed bumps.
Just catching up on this... one thing people forget is that the mean look usually comes from the stance too. Be careful with those F1 lights though, some of the cheaper ones have terrible sealing and youll get condensation after the first car wash. I would suggest checking out Subimods instead of just sticking to the big names, they have a lot of unique stuff that feels a bit more solid. If you want the most bang for your buck without ruining your paint, look at the Rally Armor UR Mud Flaps with Blue Logo. I like them way more than the stiff plastic ones because they actually flex when you hit a speed bump or high curb. For the rear, a duckbill like the OLM S-Line Carbon Fiber Trunk Spoiler gives it a much more aggressive profile than the stock lip but keeps it looking refined rather than tacky. Also, if youre doing emblem swaps, make sure to get the Subimods Molded Front and Rear Emblem Frames instead of just vinyl stickers. The stickers look kinda cheap after a few months of sun exposure whereas the molded frames actually replace that tacky chrome finish properly. Just dont rush the install, take your time cleaning the old adhesive off or it wont sit flush.
