honestly so over the official audi crossbars i bought last week. they howl like a ghost whenever i go over 50 and it's driving me nuts especially since this car is supposed to be quiet. i spent way too much money on this e-tron to have it sound like a wind tunnel. i need to find something else before our family ski trip to mammoth in two weeks. im looking to spend maybe $600 max if possible but i just need something that actually fits the flush rails without making that awful whistling noise. has anyone had better luck with thule or maybe yakima? which roof rack systems actually work best for the q4 e-tron because i'm about to return these ones...
OEM bars are honestly a major letdown.
Building on the earlier suggestion, I honestly think those heavy-duty brands are complete overkill if you just want silence! I tracked decibel levels on my Q4 and the Aguri Prestige II S7 Aluminum Aero Bars were genuinely fantastic, way quieter than my old Thule rig. Amazing stuff! Quick tip... make sure the T-track rubber strips are cut exactly to length. Even a 2mm gap will make it howl.
I've been extremely satisfied with a more methodical, budget-friendly approach that basically side-steps that massive premium brand tax. If you want silence without spending $800, these options work well:
I totally get the frustration with that wind noise!! It is literally the worst when you have a super quiet EV like the Q4 e-tron and all you hear is whistling at high speeds. I actually swapped my setup recently and the difference is amazing. To solve this before your ski trip, I suggest focusing on aerodynamic profiles that are specifically engineered for silence.
@Reply #3 - good point! Thule and Yakima are definitely the heavy hitters for a reason. Over the years, I have seen so many people focus on noise while totally ignoring the actual weight rating for the Q4 roof. One thing to keep in mind is that some of these aerodynamic bars sit really low... it looks sleek, but if you have a panoramic roof, you gotta be careful. Are you planning on mounting a massive cargo box for the trip or just some slim ski carriers? If the rack is too low, you might not be able to vent the glass without hitting the mounting hardware. Honestly, check out the fitment database on etrailer before you buy anything else. They usually show the actual clearance measurements which is huge for safety. You definitely dont want to crack that glass trying to save a few bucks on a low-profile setup.
