Ive had EVs for years but this GV70 is making me nervous since my old charger keeps overheating.

My logic was just to use the mobile cable but now Im thinking a hardwired wallbox is mandatory for the faster speeds? I need a solid setup before my mountain trip next weekend...

Ngl its super frustrating how many units fail under heavy load. Unfortunately many mobile chargers are just not as good as expected for daily use. I had issues with internal thermal management on cheaper setups... if you want something bulletproof for the trip, grab the Grizzl-E Classic Level 2 40A NEMA 14-50. Its heavy duty and way more reliable than those flimsy cables.

  • Totally agree! Just please dont use sketchy unbranded cables tho. Theyre huge fire risks and total junk. Good wiring is a must!

Honestly, congrats on the GV70! Its such a smooth ride but I totally get the anxiety about the charging situation. I went through the same thing last year when my old portable cable started getting way too hot to touch and slowing down. Tbh, if you're planning mountain trips, you definitely want something that just works every time without you having to baby it. I ended up ditching the mobile cable for a dedicated wallbox and I've been super satisfied since. Here are the two I looked at most before deciding:

  • ChargePoint Home Flex Level 2 WiFi Enabled EV Charger: This is the one I eventually bought. It works well because you can hardwire it for the full 50 amps, which gives the GV70 a nice boost. Pros: the cable is really high quality and doesnt get stiff in winter. Cons: it's definitely one of the more expensive options out there.
  • Emporia Level 2 EV Charger 48 Amp Hardwired: This was my second choice. Its great if you're looking for something cost-effective that still feels premium. Pros: way cheaper than others and the energy monitoring is top-tier. Cons: the design is a bit industrial looking, not as sleek. Hardwiring is 100% the way to go for the GV70 if you want those faster speeds and better reliability. I've had zero complaints since making the switch... it just feels way safer than relying on a plug-in mobile unit every night. You're gonna love the car once the charging is sorted and you dont have to worry about the heat anymore.
