What are the absolute best performance accessories for the Model S Plaid that actually hold up under track pressure?
Ive been an EV guy for a decade now- started with a P85D back in the day- but this Plaid is genuinely terrifying me with the brake fade. Im in the Bay Area and booked a slot at Laguna Seca in three weeks so I'm on a tight timeline and freaking out because the stock setup feels like it's gonna melt.
Budget is around 5k for now. Do I just need titanium shims and better fluid or should I bite the bullet on a full brake kit? Also curious about cooling mods because the heat soak is already hitting me on mountain runs...
Honestly, you gotta be really careful taking that Plaid to Laguna Seca with the stock setup. That car is way too heavy for the factory pads and fluid to handle those massive elevation drops. Since youre on a tight timeline and have a 5k budget, I would suggest focusing entirely on the braking system first. You definitely need high-temp fluid like Castrol SRF Racing Brake Fluid and more aggressive pads. I personally use Unplugged Performance Street and Track Brake Pads and they handle the heat soak much better than the OEM stuff. Titanium shims are a decent band-aid but they wont save you from boiling the fluid. You might want to consider the Mountain Pass Performance Front Master Cylinder Brace to firm up that pedal feel. Cooling is a bigger project, so just make sure to pull any air duct covers to let the rotors breathe... just dont stay out for more than a few hard laps at a time.
> Im on a tight timeline and freaking out because the stock setup feels like it's gonna melt. Been thinking about this... In my experience, rotors are the real bottleneck for Plaids on track. I’d grab some GiroDisc Front 2-Piece Floating Rotors to help with heat dissipation. Also, dont overlook the Unplugged Performance Stainless Steel Brake Line Kit for safety. It stops the lines from expanding when the fluid gets scorching, which keeps the pedal feel way more consistent. Safety is priority #1 when youre tossing 5,000 lbs into a corner.
Just catching up on this thread and honestly, I am still pretty disappointed with how the Plaid handles heat out of the box. It is frustrating that such an expensive car needs so much extra work just to feel safe at a place like Laguna. I had issues with my first setup where even with better fluid, the heat soak was just not as good as expected and ruined my session. Since you want to stay under 5k and keep things reliable, here are a few things that actually help without breaking the bank.
Late to the party but totally agree on the rotor upgrade. Im really happy with how much titanium shims help too... theyre such a cheap way to keep the heat from cooking your caliper seals during those heavy sessions.
